Lesson Plan

Hygiene Foundations Plan

Students will learn why personal hygiene is vital by identifying daily habits that prevent illness and promote well-being. They will play a germ-identification game, discuss clean vs. unclean behaviors, and track their own routines to build healthy habits.

Good hygiene reduces sickness, builds confidence, and supports a healthy classroom and community. Early mastery of daily hygiene habits fosters lifelong wellness.

Why Hygiene Matters

• What is hygiene?
• Why do clean habits keep us healthy?
• How can we use hygiene every day?

Introduce the lesson by connecting with students: ask them if they’ve ever been sick or had a bad day because they felt dirty. Emphasize that today we’ll learn how simple habits can keep us healthy and happy.

What Are Germs?

• Germs are tiny organisms: bacteria and viruses.
• They live everywhere: on hands, doorknobs, phones.
• Some germs help us, but some make us sick.

Use a magnifying glass image or cartoon of germs. Explain that germs are tiny living things we cannot see with our eyes but can make us sick.

How Germs Spread

• Through touch: shaking hands, sharing items.
• Through sneezes and coughs: droplets in the air.
• Through dirty surfaces: desks, toys, keyboards.

Demonstrate with glitter or chalk: shake hands, then show how germs spread. Ask students for other ways germs travel.

Handwashing: Your Best Defense

• Wet hands with clean water.
• Lather soap and scrub all over for 20 seconds.
• Rinse well and dry with a clean towel.

Walk through each handwashing step. If possible, show a poster or video clip of proper technique. Encourage students to count 20 seconds while singing “Happy Birthday” twice.

Dental Care: Brush & Floss

• Brush teeth at least twice a day.
• Use toothpaste with fluoride.
• Floss daily to remove hidden germs.

Ask students how often they brush their teeth. Discuss what happens if we skip brushing or flossing. Show a model of clean vs. decayed teeth.

Bathing & Clean Clothes

• Take a bath or shower regularly.
• Use soap to wash your body and shampoo for hair.
• Wear clean clothes each day.

Emphasize that bathing keeps our skin and hair healthy. Ask for creative ways to make bath time fun, like colorful soaps or music.

Why Good Hygiene Helps Everyone

• Less sickness means fewer missed school days.
• Cleaner classroom is more fun and safe.
• Healthy habits build confidence and well-being.

Summarize how hygiene benefits individuals and the whole class. Encourage students to name their favorite hygiene habit and why.

Your Hygiene Challenge

• Pick one habit to improve this week.
• Use your Hygiene Tracker to record daily progress.
• Share your success at the end of the week!

Invite students to set a personal hygiene goal for the week. Explain the Hygiene Tracker worksheet they’ll complete next.

Warm Up

Germ Guessing Game Instructions

Description: Students will work in pairs to predict which everyday objects harbor the most germs. This interactive warm-up sparks curiosity about unseen microbes and sets the stage for discussing how hygiene habits keep us healthy.

Materials:

  • Cards or slips with the name (and image) of each object below
  • (Optional) Small whiteboards or paper for each pair

Objects to Guess:

  1. Smartphone
  2. Computer Keyboard
  3. Classroom Door Handle
  4. Lunch Table Surface
  5. Toothbrush Holder

Steps (5 minutes):

  1. Divide students into pairs and hand each pair the list of object cards.
  2. Ask each pair to rank the objects from most to least germs. They can write or draw their ranking.
  3. After 2 minutes, invite pairs to share their top guess for the germiest item.
  4. Reveal approximate germ counts (for teacher reference):
    • Smartphone: ~17,000 germs per square inch
    • Lunch Table Surface: ~5,000 germs per square inch
    • Computer Keyboard: ~3,000 germs per square inch
    • Toothbrush Holder: ~2,000 germs per square inch
    • Classroom Door Handle: ~1,000 germs per square inch
  5. Discuss as a class:
    • Why do phones have so many germs?
    • What habits could lead to fewer germs on these objects?

This activity introduces the idea that germs are everywhere and leads naturally into our lesson on proper hygiene habits!

Discussion

Clean vs. Unclean Talk

Discussion Purpose

Help students practice identifying healthy (clean) and risky (unclean) behaviors in everyday situations, and understand why certain habits keep us safe.

Discussion Guidelines

  • Listen respectfully to each other’s ideas.
  • Speak clearly and use full sentences.
  • Give reasons for your choices ("I think this is clean because…").
  • Be open to changing your mind when you hear new information.

How to Do This Activity

  1. Organize into small groups of 3–4 students.
  2. Each group receives a set of Scenario Cards (teacher-prepared).
  3. For each scenario, discuss and decide:
    • Is this behavior Clean or Unclean?
    • Why did you choose that?
    • How could we make an unclean scenario clean?
  4. Record your answers on your paper or whiteboard.
  5. A spokesperson from each group will share one scenario and your group’s reasoning with the class.

Scenario Examples

  1. Sneezing into your hands
    • Clean or Unclean?
    • Why?
  2. Sneezing into your elbow
    • Clean or Unclean?
    • Why?
  3. Sharing a friend’s water bottle
    • Clean or Unclean?
    • Why?
  4. Washing hands before eating lunch
    • Clean or Unclean?
    • Why?
  5. Wearing the same socks for three days in a row
    • Clean or Unclean?
    • Why?

Follow-Up Questions

  • How do germs spread in each scenario?
  • Which clean habits would help stop germs?
  • What is one new habit you can start today to stay cleaner?

After discussion, students can complete My Daily Hygiene Tracker to practice their new clean habit.
