Welcome to Your Reflection Session

Understanding ourselves helps us grow. Today, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, and actions together in a safe space.

Welcome the student and set a calm, supportive tone. Briefly explain that this session is about understanding themselves better.

Your Inner Compass

What guides your actions?
How do you react to challenges?
What makes you feel proud, or frustrated?

Ask the student how they are feeling today and if they have any initial thoughts on what they want to discuss or reflect upon. Reiterate the purpose of the session.

Thinking Back: A Recent Moment

Recall a specific situation from the past week or two.
Where were you?
Who was there?
What happened?

Introduce the idea of reviewing a recent event. Ask them to think of a specific situation that stands out, where they felt a strong emotion or reacted in a way they want to understand better.

Your Thoughts in That Moment

What were you thinking right before it happened?
What thoughts came to mind during the situation?
How about afterward?

Guide the student to describe their thoughts leading up to, during, and after the event. Emphasize that all thoughts are valid.

Feeling It: Your Emotions

What emotions did you feel?
Where did you feel them in your body?
Did your feelings change throughout the situation?

Help the student identify the emotions they experienced. Use open-ended questions to encourage deeper emotional reflection.

Your Actions & Reactions

What did you do or say?
How did your actions impact others?
Was this typical for you, or different?

Discuss their actions. What did they actually do? How did they react? Connect actions back to thoughts and feelings.

Spotting the Spark: Identifying Triggers

Is there a pattern here?
What situations or feelings often lead to similar reactions?
What 'sets you off'?

Now, begin to look for patterns. Ask if they notice anything similar between this event and others. Introduce the concept of a 'trigger.'

Building New Pathways: Coping Strategies

What could you do differently next time?
What helps you calm down or think clearly?
Who can you talk to for support?

Encourage brainstorming new ways to respond. Emphasize that they have the power to choose their response.

Your Power to Change

Self-reflection is a powerful tool.
Every day is a chance to learn and grow.
You have the strength to make positive changes!

Conclude the session, reinforcing the value of self-reflection and encouraging them to use the worksheet for ongoing self-monitoring. Offer positive reinforcement.

Guided Reflection Prompts

Introduction & Warm-Up (3 minutes)

Teacher: "Hi [Student's Name], thanks for being here today. We're going to spend about 20 minutes together, and our goal is to help you understand your thoughts, feelings, and actions a bit better, especially in certain situations. It's a chance to reflect on what's been happening and think about how you want to move forward. This is a safe space, and there are no right or wrong answers – just your honest reflections."

Teacher: "Let's start by just checking in. How are you feeling today, and is there anything specific on your mind that you're hoping to talk about or understand?" (Pause for student response. Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 1-2)

Guided Reflection: Thinking Back (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Great. To begin our reflection, I'd like you to think back to a recent situation, maybe in the last week or two, where you felt a strong emotion or reacted in a way that stands out to you. It doesn't have to be a big event, just something you're willing to explore." (Pause for student to recall. Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 3)

Teacher: "Can you describe that situation for me? Where were you? Who was there? What exactly happened? Try to give me as much detail as you remember."

Teacher: "Thank you for sharing that. Now, let's think about your thoughts during that time. What was going through your mind right before this situation started?" (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 4)

Teacher: "And what about during the situation itself? What thoughts were you having then?"

Teacher: "After it was all over, what thoughts did you have about what happened?"

Teacher: "Let's shift to your feelings. What emotions did you notice yourself feeling during that situation? Sometimes it helps to think about where you felt those emotions in your body." (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 5)

Teacher: "Did your feelings change at all as the situation unfolded?"

Teacher: "And finally, let's talk about your actions. What did you do or say in that moment?" (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 6)

Teacher: "How do you think your actions impacted the people around you, or the situation itself?"

Teacher: "Is this a typical reaction for you, or did this feel different?"

Identify Triggers & Strategies (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Now that we've looked closely at that one situation, let's zoom out a bit. Do you notice any patterns here? Have you been in similar situations or felt similar feelings that led to similar reactions?" (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 7)

Teacher: "Sometimes, certain things can 'trigger' a particular feeling or reaction. What do you think might be some of your triggers – things that often 'set you off' or make you feel a certain way?"

Teacher: "That's really insightful. Knowing your triggers is a big step. Now, let's think about what you could do differently next time you face a similar situation or feel those emotions building up. What are some things that help you calm down, think clearly, or respond in a way that feels better for you?" (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 8)

Teacher: "Who are some people you can talk to if you need support or want to process something?"

Action Planning & Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

Teacher: "Excellent ideas. We have a Reflection & Action Plan Worksheet that can help you keep track of these thoughts. Let's start filling out the 'Action Plan' section now. What's one or two strategies you want to try practicing this week?" (Hand over or share the worksheet and guide the student to fill it out.)

Teacher: "Remember, self-reflection is a powerful tool, and you're doing great work by taking the time to understand yourself. Every day is a chance to learn and grow. You have the strength to make positive changes! We can check back in about this next time we meet." (Refer to Looking Within Slides Slide 9)

Teacher: "Thank you for sharing today."
