Superhero Emotions
Welcome, Superheroes! Today, we learn about our feelings and how to manage them like a superhero.
Introduce the session with excitement, and welcome the students as superheroes. Explain that understanding feelings helps them be powerful like real superheroes.
What are Precursor Behaviors?
Precursor behaviors are the little signs our body shows before feelings get big. Can you spot a clue?
Explain the concept of precursor behaviors in a simple way. Use visuals like comic-style examples of actions (clenched fists, deep breaths) that appear before an outburst.
Recognize Your Emotions
Our bodies give us clues! Look at pictures of clenched fists, quick breaths, or frowns. What do these tell us about our feelings?
Highlight how we can recognize our emotions. Ask students to think about times they felt nervous, angry, or happy, and how their body responded.
Superhero Strategies
Superheroes have special tools! Take a deep breath, count to five, or stretch your arms. Which strategy will you use when you feel a big emotion?
Introduce simple strategies to handle intense emotions. Use superhero language to reinforce that every superhero has tools to reset their emotions.
Movement & Cool Down
Let's move like superheroes! Follow along with some deep breaths and stretches to calm our bodies and minds.
Prepare the students for a movement break. Demonstrate deep breathing and simple stretches while using superhero stances (e.g., fists on hips like a superhero pose).
You Are a Superhero!
Remember: Every superhero learns to manage their feelings. What super strategy will you use when your emotions start to grow?
Wrap up the lesson by reminding them that managing emotions makes them strong. Encourage the group to share a superhero moment when they used a strategy.
Worksheet
Emotion Recognition Worksheet
This worksheet will help you recognize your feelings by looking at clues from your body! Read the instructions below and fill in your answers in the space provided.
Part 1: What Do You Feel?
Look at the pictures of different actions. For each picture, write the emotion you think it shows. For example, if you see someone with clenched fists, what might they be feeling?
- Picture of clenched fists:
- Picture of quick breaths:
- Picture of a frown:
Part 2: Precursor Behaviors at Home or School
Think about a time when your body showed a small sign that you were starting to feel a big emotion (like a quick breath or a clenched hand).
Describe what you noticed next in your body (for example, did your hands get tense or did you feel your heart beat faster?):
Part 3: Super Strategy!
Imagine you are a superhero. When you notice these clues, you have special strategies to help you feel better. Draw or write about one strategy you can use. It might be taking a deep breath, counting to five, or stretching your arms!
Your superhero strategy:
Remember, every superhero learns to understand and manage their feelings. Keep practicing to become even stronger!
Reading
The Brave Little Superhero
Once upon a time in a quiet town, there was a young superhero named Alex. Alex wasn’t very big, but he had a heart filled with courage. Every day, Alex practiced his superhero skills to help others and to keep his own feelings safe.
A Special Challenge
One sunny morning, while playing in the park, Alex began to feel a little storm inside him. His hands felt tight, and his breathing grew fast. Alex knew these were clues that his feelings were about to get very big. Remembering all his training, he stopped to think about what was happening inside his body.
Recognizing the Signs
Alex had learned that every superhero has a secret: to notice small signs when feelings start to build. He took a deep breath, just as he had practiced, and felt the tightness begin to ease. He looked around and saw that the trees were gently swaying, and the birds sang their quiet song. Those simple clues reminded him that he had the power to calm his stormy emotions.
The Super Strategy
Alex smiled and decided it was the perfect time to use his super strategy. He counted slowly to five in his head while imagining his feelings shrinking away like a shrinking shadow. With each count, he felt a lot more relaxed and ready to enjoy his day.
A Lesson for Every Superhero
By the end of the day, Alex knew that being a superhero wasn’t just about lifting heavy objects or flying high in the sky. It was also about understanding his own emotions and knowing how to manage them. Every superhero, no matter how small, has the power to recognize the clues their body gives them and to use a special strategy to feel better.
So, remember, just like Alex, whenever you feel a big emotion starting to grow, take a deep breath, count slowly, or stretch your arms wide. These are your superhero strategies that keep you safe and strong.
The end.
Activity
Emotion Charades
In this fun and interactive activity, you'll become a superhero by acting out different emotions and the behaviors that come before big feelings. This game will help you recognize and understand what your body does when it feels different emotions.
How to Play:
-
Teacher's Role:
- The teacher will call out the name of an emotion (like "happy", "angry", or "nervous") or a precursor behavior (for example, "clenched fists" or "quick breaths").
- The teacher may also show a card with the emotion or behavior written on it.
-
Student's Turn:
- One by one, each student will step up and act out the emotion or behavior without saying any words.
- Use your whole body to show what the emotion feels like. Think of a superhero pose or a fun move as you express that feeling!
-
Guessing:
- The other student listens and watches carefully to guess which emotion or behavior is being acted out.
- Once the correct emotion is guessed, the class discusses what clues helped them understand the feeling.
Discussion Points After Each Turn:
- What clues did you see in your classmate's actions?
- How do you think your body feels when you experience this emotion?
- What super strategy might a superhero use to handle this feeling?
Remember, every superhero learns to recognize and manage their feelings. Have fun and be a super emotion detective!
Let's get started and show our superhero emotions!
Game
Strategy Match-Up
In this interactive game, you'll be matching the clues your body shows (precursor behaviors) with cool superhero strategies that can help manage big feelings!
How to Play:
-
Set-Up:
- Lay out cards with pictures or words of different precursor behaviors (like "clenched fists", "quick breaths", or "frowning").
- On separate cards, display various strategies (like "deep breaths", "count to five", "stretch arms") that our superheroes use to keep calm.
-
Game Play:
- One at a time, each student picks a precursor behavior card.
- The student then selects the strategy card they think best helps with that behavior.
- If they match the strategy correctly, they get to hold on to the pair as a point, and the class briefly discusses why that strategy works well.
-
Team Effort:
- Work together as a team to match all the precursor behaviors with the right strategies. Discuss each pairing as a class—what signs do these behaviors show, and how does each strategy help calm down?
Questions to Consider:
- What clue did the precursor behavior give you about the feeling someone might be having?
- How does the strategy you chose help a superhero (or you) feel better when emotions get big?
- Can you think of another strategy that might also work well?
Remember: Every superhero learns that understanding their body's clues can help them choose the right strategy to feel safe and strong. Have fun matching and learning, superheroes!
