Self-Advocacy Adventure

Increase self advocacy in class

This lesson is designed to help a 6th grade male student develop self-advocacy skills through engaging activities. By using Game-Based and Inquiry-Based Learning strategies, the student will explore scenarios where self-advocacy is essential and practice these skills in a supportive environment. This lesson is important as it empowers students to express their needs and seek help, fostering independence and confidence in the classroom.

Self-Advocacy Scenario Cards, Worksheet: Self-Advocacy Reflection, Pens, and Whiteboard and markers

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Begin with a brief discussion on what self-advocacy means.
  • Ask the student if they can think of a time when they needed to ask for help or express their needs in class.

Step 2

Scenario Game

15 mins

  • Introduce the Self-Advocacy Scenario Cards.
  • Explain that each card presents a classroom situation where self-advocacy is needed.
  • Have the student pick a card and read the scenario aloud.
  • Discuss possible ways to handle the situation, encouraging the student to think of different strategies.
  • Role-play the scenario with the student, allowing them to practice their response.

Step 3

Worksheet Activity

5 mins

  • Hand out the 'Self-Advocacy Reflection' worksheet.
  • Ask the student to reflect on the scenario they role-played and write down how they felt and what they learned.
  • Encourage them to think about how they can apply these skills in real-life situations.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

  • Recap the importance of self-advocacy in the classroom.
  • Ask the student to share one thing they will try to do differently in class to advocate for themselves.
  • Thank the student for participating and encourage them to practice these skills regularly.
