Lesson Plan

Seeds on the Move Plan

Students will learn why plants need to move their seeds to new places and define key vocabulary words. By the end, they will identify methods of seed dispersal and complete two related worksheets.

Understanding seed dispersal helps students grasp how plants reproduce and thrive in new environments, connecting science to the natural world around them.

Audience

2nd Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive slides followed by hands-on worksheets

Materials

Vocabulary Slides for Seed Dispersal, Seed Movement Worksheet, and Seed Dispersal Sorting Worksheet

Prep

Review and Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Review the Vocabulary Slides for Seed Dispersal
  • Print enough copies of the Seed Movement Worksheet for each student
  • Print enough copies of the Seed Dispersal Sorting Worksheet
  • Set up projector or interactive whiteboard

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Ask students if they have ever seen seeds move from one place to another
  • Explain the lesson objective: learning why seeds travel and how this helps plants grow in new places
  • Show slide 1 of the Vocabulary Slides for Seed Dispersal to introduce the topic

Step 2

Vocabulary Presentation

10 minutes

  • Display slides defining each term: seed, plant, grow, move, disperse, wind, animal, water
  • For each word: read definition, show image, and discuss real-world examples
  • Encourage volunteers to use each vocabulary word in a sentence

Step 3

Worksheet Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Seed Movement Worksheet
    • Students draw or list examples of seeds moved by wind, water, and animals
  • Distribute the Seed Dispersal Sorting Worksheet
    • Students match pictures of seeds to the correct dispersal method
  • Circulate to support understanding and answer questions

Step 4

Review and Share

5 minutes

  • Invite students to share one way seeds move and explain why that method helps the plant
  • Revisit the definition of “disperse” and connect it to the examples
  • Collect worksheets to assess comprehension

Slide Deck

Seed Dispersal Vocabulary

Today’s words:

  • Seed
  • Plant
  • Grow
  • Move
  • Disperse
  • Wind
  • Animal
  • Water

Today we will learn eight important words about how seeds move and help plants grow. Read the list and point to each word. Ask if any student already knows one of these words.

Seed

Definition: A seed is a plant’s baby. It has everything it needs to start growing.

[Image of different seeds: sunflower, acorn, etc.]

Say: “A seed is like a baby plant. It holds everything the plant needs to start growing.” Show real seeds if available.

Plant

Definition: A plant is a living thing that grows from a seed and makes its own food using sunlight, water, and air.

[Image of a flower, tree, or grass]

Explain that a plant is a living thing that uses sunlight, water, and air to make food. Ask for examples of plants they know.

Grow

Definition: Grow means to get bigger or taller over time.

[Image showing stages: seedling ➞ small plant ➞ tall plant]

Ask: “What does grow mean?” Then read the definition and point to the image. Encourage students to describe how a seed grows.

Move

Definition: Move means to go from one place to another.

[Image of a seed being carried by wind or animal]

Demonstrate moving by sliding your hand across the table. Connect it to how seeds move from one place to another.

Disperse

Definition: Disperse means to spread out to many different places.

[Image of seeds scattered on the ground]

Emphasize that disperse means to spread out. Use confetti or small objects to show dispersal.

Wind

Definition: Wind is moving air that can carry seeds to new places.

[Image of dandelion seeds blowing away]

Read the definition, then blow gently on a dandelion clock or show a video of seeds blowing in the wind.

Animal

Definition: An animal is a living creature that can help move seeds by eating fruit or carrying seeds on its fur.

[Image of a squirrel with an acorn]

Explain how animals like birds or squirrels help seeds move when they eat fruit or carry nuts.

Water

Definition: Water is a liquid that can carry seeds in rivers, streams, or rain puddles to new places.

[Image of seeds floating in water]

Discuss how water in streams or rain can float seeds to new locations. Show seeds floating in water.

Worksheet

Seed Movement Worksheet

In this worksheet, you will draw a picture or write a sentence to show how seeds move with the help of wind, water, and animals.

1. Wind-Dispersed Seeds

Draw or describe a seed that moves by wind.

2. Water-Dispersed Seeds

Draw or describe a seed that moves by water (like a river or rain).

3. Animal-Dispersed Seeds

Draw or describe a seed that moves when an animal helps carry it.

4. Why Move?

Why do you think it’s good for plants to move their seeds to new places?

Worksheet

Seed Dispersal Sorting Worksheet

In this activity, look at each picture of seeds and decide how the seed moves to a new place. Write WIND, WATER, or ANIMAL in the blank space beside each picture. You can also draw a line from the picture to the word.

  1. [Image of dandelion seeds blowing in the wind]
    Dispersal method: ________

  2. [Image of a coconut floating on water]
    Dispersal method: ________

  3. [Image of burrs stuck to an animal’s fur]
    Dispersal method: ________

  4. [Image of maple “helicopter” seeds spinning through the air]
    Dispersal method: ________

  5. [Image of seeds drifting down a stream]
    Dispersal method: ________

  6. [Image of a bird eating berries and dropping seeds]
    Dispersal method: ________

Bonus Challenge:
Pick two pictures above and draw arrows to show the path each seed takes when it moves.

Seed Dispersal Anchor Chart

Let’s build this chart together after our vocabulary slides. We’ll display it in the classroom as a reference!

1. Vocabulary Words & Definitions

• Seed: A plant’s baby. It has everything to start growing.

• Plant: A living thing that makes its own food from sunlight, water, and air.

• Grow: To get bigger or taller over time.

• Move: To go from one place to another.

• Disperse: To spread out to many different places.

• Wind: Moving air that can carry seeds.

• Water: Liquid (like rain or rivers) that floats seeds to new spots.

• Animal: A creature that moves seeds by eating fruit or carrying on fur.

2. How Seeds Get Around

Dispersal MethodHow It WorksExample Drawing/Note
WindAir blows lightweight seedsDandelion fluff floating
WaterSeeds float on rivers/puddlesCoconut drifting
AnimalSeeds stick or get eatenBurrs on a dog’s fur

Invite students to help you draw each example or add a sticky-note sketch in the right column.

3. Student Contribution Spot

Once the chart is up, ask volunteers to add their own examples:

• Wind Example: ___________________________________

• Water Example: _________________________________

• Animal Example: ________________________________

Encourage students to draw a small picture or write a sentence next to each example.
