Mindful DBT Journey Plan
Provide a 16‐week DBT group curriculum for K–5 students, introducing mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness through playful activities, icebreakers, and visual handouts each session.
This structured, tier-2 DBT program builds self-awareness, coping skills, and positive social behaviors for neurodiverse elementary students, reducing challenging behaviors.

Prep
Gather & Prep Materials
45 minutes
- Collect sensory items for glitter jars, bubble wands, Calm Box, etc.
- Print and cut Glitter Jar Visualization, Bubble Breathing Guide, Five Senses Scavenger Hunt, and all other handouts.
- Assemble cue cards and posters for TIPP, ACCEPTS, DEAR MAN, GIVE, FAST.
- Review scripts for each session to anticipate student questions.
Step 1
Session 1: Introduce Mindfulness
30 minutes
- Icebreaker: Play Mindful Simon Says (slow stretching, gentle tapping)
- Lesson: Explain “mindfulness” as paying attention to right now.
- Activity: Make and shake glitter jars; watch calm as glitter settles.
- Game: Glitter Jar Freeze – when jar stops moving, freeze in place.

- Script: "Today we're going to slow down like this jar. Notice how your breathing can settle your mind. Shake, watch, and breathe deep."
- Differentiation: Offer step-by-step picture sequence cards for students needing extra structure.

Session 2: Bubble Breathing
30 minutes
- Icebreaker: Bubble Popping Race (gentle, 1:1 pacing)
- Lesson: Teach “bubble breathing” to calm big feelings.
- Activity: Demonstrate deep breaths by blowing bubbles; count as they rise.
- Game: Bubble Trail – follow bubble path with eyes and breathe.

- Script: "We breathe in slowly to fill our tummies, then blow out gently like these bubbles."
- Differentiation: Provide visual breathing exhale cue (color changing chart).

Session 3: Five Senses Scavenger Hunt

- Lesson: Use senses to anchor in the present.
- Activity: Small teams find items matching each sense on checklist.
- Game: Sensory Relay – pass a mystery object, describe by sense.

Session 4: Wise Mind

- Activity: Sort statements into Head Mind vs. Heart Mind vs. Wise Mind.
- Game: Wise Mind Tag – tag peers with ‘head’, ‘heart’, or ‘wise’.

Session 5: Building Your Calm Box

- Icebreaker: Show & Tell (bring one calming item)
- Lesson: Explain Calm Box for self-soothing items.
- Activity: Choose items (stress ball, soft fabric) and decorate box.
- Game: Calm Box Mystery – guess item by touch, then practice.

- Differentiation: Offer templates for decorating for fine motor support.

Session 6: Simplified TIPP Skills
30 minutes
- Icebreaker: Quick Energy Burst (jumping jacks)
- Lesson: Teach Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Progressive muscle tensing.
- Activity: Rotate through 4 TIPP stations.
- Game: TIPP Bingo – mark each skill as practiced.

- Script: "Use these skills when you feel your body racing. Try ice or a fast walk."
- Differentiation: Modify exercise intensity per ability.

Session 7: Change the Channel
30 minutes
- Icebreaker: TV Remote Freeze (freeze when teacher says ‘change channel’)
- Lesson: Distract and redirect thoughts like changing TV channels.
- Activity: Create “channels” on cards (colors, jokes, songs).
- Game: Channel Race – switch cards and practice redirecting.

- Differentiation: Pre-select channels for students who need fewer choices.

Session 8: ACCEPTS Strategies

- Activity: Role-play one ACCEPTS each.

Glitter Jar Visualization Worksheet
Use this handout to guide you through the glitter jar mindfulness exercise. Shake your jar and watch the glitter settle as you follow the steps below.
1. Before You Shake
How do you feel right now? Write or draw your current mood and body sensations.
2. Draw Your Jar
In the space below, sketch your glitter jar. Include where the glitter starts and where it lands when it settles.

Activity
Group Glitter Jar Practice
Use this guided group activity to practice the glitter jar mindfulness exercise together. Students will observe, reflect, and share insights in pairs and as a full group.
Materials
- Glitter jars (one per student)
- Glitter Jar Visualization Worksheet (one per student)
- Timer
- Clipboards or hard surface for writing/drawing
Activity Outline (30 minutes)
- Setup & Introduction (5 min)
- Gather students in a circle.
- Remind them of today’s goal: practice noticing thoughts, feelings, and body sensations as the glitter settles.
- Distribute glitter jars and worksheets.
- Glitter Jar Observation (5 min)
- Ask everyone to complete Step 1 (“Before You Shake”) on their worksheet.
- At the count of three, have students shake their jars together.
- Set the timer for 2 minutes of silent observation as the glitter swirls and settles.
- Individual Reflection (5 min)[Allow drawing/writing space:]
- Invite students to finish Steps 2–5 on their worksheets while observing the jar again if needed.
- Encourage drawing or writing:
- What did you notice in your thoughts?
- How did your breathing or body sensations change?
- Pair Share (7 min)
- Pair students up (or form small triads).
- Provide these reflection prompts:
- What was your biggest “wow” moment watching the glitter?
- Which part of your body felt most calm or tense?
- How did your mood shift from start to finish?
- Give each student 1–2 minutes to share and listen.
- Whole-Group Debrief (5 min)
- Reconvene as a circle.
- Ask 3–4 volunteers to share one insight from their pair/trio discussion.
- Reinforce: “Noticing small changes in our mind and body helps us practice mindfulness every day.”
- Closure & Next Steps (3 min)
- Have the group take three deep, slow breaths together.
- Remind students to keep their Glitter Jar Visualization Worksheet and use it whenever they need a calm moment.
- Collect worksheets or invite students to take them to their Calm Boxes for future use.
This group practice builds self-awareness and sharing skills while reinforcing the glitter jar mindfulness tool. Feel free to adjust pairing or timing for your class needs!
