Script

Session 1 Script: Introducing and Naming Feelelings

Time: 10 minutes
Materials: Feelings Faces Chart, Emotion Word Cards, Feelings Matching Activity

1. Welcome and Warm-Up (1 minute)

Teacher (smiling, at eye level): “Hi there! I’m so happy to see you today. We’re going to have fun talking about feelings. Everybody has feelings—like being happy, sad, or surprised—and we can learn to tell others how we feel.”

(Give a high-five or fist bump to build rapport.)

2. Introduction to Feelings (2 minutes)

Teacher (holding up the Feelings Faces Chart): “Look at this chart—these are different faces showing different feelings. Let’s look at the first one together.”

–––
Face #1: (point to 😀)
Teacher: “What feeling do you think this face is showing?”
Possible student response: “Happy!”
Teacher: “Yes—happy! My turn to say it: H-A-P-P-Y, happy.”
Praise: “Great job!”

(If student doesn’t respond: “This face has a big smile. Do you think it’s happy or sad?”)

–––
Face #2: (point to ☹️)
Teacher: “Now this one—what do you think? Does this face look happy or sad?”
Possible student response: “Sad.”
Teacher: “That’s right—sad. S-A-D, sad. Fantastic!”

(If needed: “Look at the down-turned mouth—it looks like it wants a hug.”)

–––
Face #3: (point to 😠)
Teacher: “How about this face? Is it angry, surprised, or happy?”
Possible student response: “Angry.”
Teacher: “Yes—angry. A-N-G-R-Y, angry. You’re doing awesome!”

3. Emotion Word Card Practice (3 minutes)

Teacher (spreading the Emotion Word Cards face down): “Now let’s play a card game! I’ll shuffle these word cards, and you pick one. If you need help reading, just let me know.”

  1. Student picks a card.
Teacher: “You picked the word ‘happy.’ Can you say ‘happy’ with me? Happy. That means when you feel really good inside—like when you play with your favorite toy!”
    Student repeats ‘happy.’
Teacher: “Let’s find the happy face on our chart and put this card next to it.”
  2. Repeat for the next two cards (e.g., sad and angry):
Teacher: “This card says ‘sad.’ Sad is when you feel like you want to cry. Which face is sad? Great!”

(Give a sticker or high-five for each correct match.)

4. Matching Activity Sheet (3 minutes)

Teacher (handing over the Feelings Matching Activity): “Here’s your matching sheet. You’ll see the same faces. Find the word cards we used and place each one below the matching face. I’m here to help you if you get stuck.”

(Stand beside the student, watching. If the student hesitates, prompt: “Which word ends with a ‘d’ sound—happy or sad?” or “This face looks surprised—do you remember that word?”)

Teacher Praise: “Nice work! You matched all of them!”

5. Reflection and Check-Out (1 minute)

Teacher (kneeling to the student’s level): “You did an amazing job today naming feelings! Which feeling was your favorite?”
Possible student response: “Happy!”
Teacher: “Show me your happy face one more time.”
(Student makes happy face.)
Teacher: “Perfect—look at that big smile! I’m proud of you. Next time, we’ll learn how we can help a friend who feels these feelings. Great job today!”

(End with a high-five or sticker.)
