Reduce impulsive behaviors

This lesson uses art, games, and mindfulness to help an 8th-grade student learn to manage impulsive behaviors and attention-seeking actions. Through creative expression, interactive activities, and calming techniques, the student will explore self-regulation strategies. This lesson is important as it provides a safe space for the student to practice self-control and express emotions constructively.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Greet the student and explain the objective of the lesson: to explore ways to express oneself creatively while managing impulsive behaviors.
  • Briefly discuss what impulsive behaviors are and why it's important to manage them.

Step 2

Mindfulness Exercise

5 mins

  • Guide the student through a simple yoga pose, such as the 'Mountain Pose.'
  • Instruct the student to stand tall with feet together, arms at their sides, and focus on their breath.
  • Encourage them to feel grounded and centered, noticing the sensations in their body.

Step 3

Art Activity

10 mins

  • Provide the student with art supplies.
  • Ask the student to draw or create something that represents how they feel when they want to act impulsively.
  • Encourage them to think about colors and shapes that express their emotions.

Step 4

Game-Based Activity

5 mins

  • Use the printable cards to play a game where the student must match emotions with appropriate actions.
  • Discuss each match and why it is a good way to handle the emotion.
