Counselor Clue Lesson Plan

Students will play Two Truths and a Lie to learn about their school counselor’s background and interests, fostering trust and comfort; by the end, each student will know at least two personal facts about their counselor.

Building positive relationships with the school counselor reduces student anxiety, encourages future help-seeking, and strengthens classroom community.

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Invite students to sit in a circle and explain that today’s goal is to get to know their school counselor better
  • Describe the Two Truths and a Lie format: counselor will share three statements, two true and one false

Step 2

Game Play

10 minutes

  • Counselor picks a card from the Truth and Lie Prompt Cards and reads three statements aloud
  • Students hold the talking piece; only the holder may speak to guess which statement is the lie
  • After group guesses, counselor reveals the lie and shares a brief story or detail
  • Repeat with 3–4 prompts or until time expires

Step 3

Reflection and Close

3 minutes

  • Ask students to share one new fact they learned about their counselor
  • Encourage students to visit the counselor if they ever need support or have questions
  • Thank students for participating and remind them of the counselor’s availability

Two Truths & a Lie to get to know your school counselor

Welcome, everyone! I’m your school counselor. Today we’ll play a fun icebreaker to help you get to know me better. Explain that we’ll play ‘Two Truths and a Lie’—I’ll share three statements about myself, and you guess which one is the lie.

Objectives

• Get to know the school counselor’s background
• Foster trust & comfort in this space
• Learn at least two personal facts

Read each objective aloud and highlight how the game supports them. Ensure students understand that by the end they’ll know at least two facts about you.

Why It Matters

• Reduces anxiety

• Strengthens our classroom community

Discuss why building relationships with the counselor matters. Emphasize how this lowers anxiety and makes students more comfortable seeking help.

Materials

Truth and Lie Prompt Cards
• Timer (e.g., smartphone or classroom timer)
• Talking Piece (e.g., small ball or talking stick)

Show the materials and brief how each is used. Remind students you prepared prompt cards in advance.

How to Play

  1. Sit in a circle and listen to the rules.
  2. I’ll read 3 statements from a prompt card.
  3. Whoever holds the talking piece guesses the lie.
  4. I reveal the lie and share a story.
  5. Repeat for 3–4 prompts or until time’s up.

Guide students step-by-step through gameplay. Set a timer for about 10 minutes total. Model the first round if needed.

• Remember, I’m here if you ever need support.
• Thank you for playing and participating!

Invite students to share what surprised them. Reinforce that they can come talk to you anytime. End on a positive note.

Use these prompt cards during the game. Each card has three statements about the counselor—two are true, one is a lie. Read all three, let students discuss, then reveal the lie and share a bit more!
