- Print copies of the My Weekly Hygiene Goal Journal for each student.
- Print copies of the Step-by-Step Showering Guide Activity for each student.
- Ensure access to a projector or smartboard for the slide deck.
Step 1
Connect and Check-In: The Mystery Smell
5 minutes
- Begin with a lighthearted discussion: "Have you ever noticed a 'mystery smell' in a locker room or a crowded bus? What do you think causes it?"
2. Introduce the concept of body odor and bacteria. Briefly explain that our bodies have natural bacteria that, when mixed with sweat, can cause smells.
3. Share the lesson's objective: Today, we're going on a 'Cleanliness Quest!' to learn the ultimate guide to staying clean and healthy. We'll discover how to effectively wash our bodies and why it's so important.
Step 2
Learn and Discuss: Unpacking Cleanliness
10 minutes
- Present the Cleanliness Quest! Slide Deck. Go through slides discussing key concepts: 'Body Odor,' 'Bacteria,' 'Effective Washing Techniques,' 'Daily Routines,' and 'Product Choices.'
2. Facilitate a brief discussion after each concept. Ask questions like: 'Why is it important to wash all parts of your body, not just the smelly ones?' or 'What are some different types of soaps or cleansers you've seen?'
3. Emphasize that different products work for different people and the goal is to feel clean and fresh.
Step 3
Model and Practice: Showering Smart
10 minutes
- Distribute the Step-by-Step Showering Guide Activity.
2. Guide students through the activity, either individually or in small groups. They will sequence the steps for effective body washing.
3. As they work, circulate and offer guidance. Once completed, review the correct order as a class, clarifying any misconceptions.
4. Encourage students to think about why each step is important (e.g., rinsing thoroughly removes soap and dirt).
Step 4
Set a Weekly Goal: My Hygiene Journey
5 minutes
- Distribute the My Weekly Hygiene Goal Journal.
2. Explain that maintaining cleanliness is a daily routine, and setting small, achievable goals can help.
3. Have students write down one personal hygiene goal they want to focus on for the upcoming week (e.g., 'Shower every day after sports,' 'Remember to wash behind my ears').
4. Encourage them to reflect on the 'why' behind their goal and how achieving it will make them feel.

Cleanliness Quest!
The Ultimate Guide to Being Clean
Why does cleanliness matter?
Welcome students and gauge their current understanding/awareness of body odor in a light-hearted way. Set a positive and open tone for the lesson.
What's That Smell?
Body Odor & Bacteria
- Body Odor: A natural part of growing up, but manageable!
- Bacteria: Tiny organisms that live on our skin.
- Sweat + Bacteria = Odor! When sweat mixes with bacteria, it can create a smell.
- Good News: You have the power to control it!
Introduce body odor as a natural occurrence, but manageable. Explain the role of bacteria in simple terms.
Showering Smart: The Steps!
Effective Washing Techniques
- Warm Water First: Get your body wet all over.
- Lather Up: Use soap or body wash on a washcloth or loofah.
- Target Areas: Focus on underarms, feet, groin area, and behind the ears.
- Scrub Gently: Don't forget your whole body!
- Rinse, Rinse, Rinse: Make sure all soap is off.
- Pat Dry: Use a clean towel.
- Deodorant/Antiperspirant: Apply after drying, especially under arms.
Explain that different parts of the body need attention. Emphasize thoroughness and gentleness.
Daily Routines
Building Healthy Habits
- Shower/Bathe Regularly: Especially after exercise or if you sweat a lot.
- Wash Your Face: Morning and night to remove dirt and oils.
- Brush & Floss: Oral hygiene is key!
- Change Clothes: Fresh clothes, fresh you.
- Clean Hands: Wash often, especially before eating and after the restroom.
Discuss the importance of consistency. Ask students about their current routines without making them feel judged.
Picking Your Products
Product Choices
- Soap/Body Wash: Find one that cleans without drying your skin.
- Shampoo & Conditioner: For clean, healthy hair.
- Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant:
- Deodorant: Masks odor.
- Antiperspirant: Reduces sweating.
- Everyone is Different: What works for one person might not work for another!
Briefly touch upon product variety and how to choose. Avoid recommending specific brands, focus on general types.
Time for Action!
Let's Get Practicing!
- Now you know the 'why' and the 'how' behind being clean.
- Time to put your knowledge to the test with our activity: Step-by-Step Showering Guide Activity!
Transition to the activity. Encourage students to think about how they can apply what they've learned.
Your Cleanliness Quest Continues!
Set Your Weekly Goal

Journal
My Weekly Hygiene Goal Journal
Staying clean and healthy is super important for how you feel and how you interact with the world. This week, you're going to set a personal hygiene goal to help you feel your best!
My Cleanliness Quest Goal:
Think about what we discussed today. What's one specific thing you want to work on this week to improve your personal hygiene? Make it something you can realistically do.
My Goal:
Why is this goal important to me? (How will achieving this goal make me feel? How will it benefit my health or confidence?)
What steps will I take to achieve my goal each day? (e.g., If my goal is to shower daily, what time will I shower? What will I do to remember?)
Daily Check-in:
Circle the face that best describes how you did with your goal each day. You can also write a quick note about your progress.

Activity
Step-by-Step Showering Guide Activity
It's time to put your knowledge to the test! Below are steps involved in taking an effective shower, but they are all mixed up. Your task is to put them in the correct order from 1 to 7.
Instructions: Read each step carefully. In the space next to each step, write the number (1-7) that represents its correct order in a thorough showering routine.
The Showering Shuffle!
Write the number (1-7) in the box to put these steps in order:
-
Apply deodorant/antiperspirant: After drying, put on deodorant or antiperspirant, especially under your arms.
-
Lather up with soap/body wash: Use a washcloth, loofah, or your hands to apply soap or body wash to your entire body, creating a good lather.
-
Get wet with warm water: Step into the shower and thoroughly wet your entire body with warm water.
-
Focus on specific areas: Pay extra attention to areas that tend to get sweaty or dirty, such as underarms, groin, feet, and behind the ears.
-
Pat yourself dry: Use a clean towel to gently pat your skin dry. Avoid harsh rubbing.
-
Rinse all soap off: Stand under the water and make sure to rinse all the soap and suds off your body until your skin feels clean, not slippery.
-
Wash your hair (optional): If washing your hair, shampoo thoroughly and rinse. Follow with conditioner if desired, then rinse completely.
Bonus Question:
Why is it important to rinse all the soap off your body thoroughly after washing?
