Be the Classroom Superhero

Family Engagement Kickoff

Creating powerful partnerships between home and school to support every learner.

Welcome everyone! Use this time to introduce yourself and set a warm, enthusiastic tone. Explain that today we’re kicking off our journey as classroom superheroes.

Why Families Are Superheroes

• Build trust and confidence in learning
• Reinforce skills and habits at home
• Model enthusiasm and curiosity
• Strengthen school–home communication

Highlight how family involvement boosts student success. Share local data or personal anecdotes if available.

Our Superpowers at Home

Common Family Strengths:
• Encouragement & positivity
• Storytelling & cultural traditions
• Organizational skills & routines
• Creative problem-solving
• Community connections

Use this slide to brainstorm a list. Invite two or three volunteers to share examples.

Identify Your Superpower

Take a moment to think:
What unique strength does your family bring to classroom learning?

• Write it on a sticky note and share!

Distribute sticky notes or chart paper. Give families a minute to write, then collect or post on a board.

Tier 1 Support: The Hero’s Role

As Tier 1 classroom superheroes, families:
• Attend events & stay informed
• Read and discuss learning at home
• Communicate needs and successes
• Partner with teachers for early support

Refer back to your MTSS overview. Clarify that Tier 1 support is everyone’s foundation role.

Superhero Support Examples

• Morning check-in routines
• Homework encouragement & help
• Volunteering for class projects
• Celebrating milestones & effort
• Sharing expertise or cultural experiences

Invite families to suggest additional examples. Record them on chart paper.

Building Our Superhero Team

Together, we create a network of support:
• How can we work as a team?
• What communication channels help us stay connected?

Emphasize community power. Encourage families to think of collaborative ideas.

Set Your Hero Mission Goals

In your journal, write one goal for this week, e.g.:
• Read a book together for 15 minutes nightly
• Share one positive learning highlight daily

Hand out the Home-School Hero Reflection Journal. Model filling out a sample goal.

Next Steps & Thank You

• Use reflection journals to guide our partnership
• Upcoming: Family Game Night, Classroom Volunteer Day
• Thank you for joining—our classroom superheroes!

Summarize the session, congratulate families, and preview upcoming opportunities.

Activity

Strengths Spotlight Circle Activity

Objective: Families and students will share and celebrate personal and family strengths in a supportive circle, building empathy, connection, and a shared commitment to learning.

Time: 15 minutes

Materials:

  • Strengths Spotlight Circle Activity sheet
  • Pens or pencils
  • Name tags or stickers
  • Talking token (e.g., small soft ball or plush toy)
  • Chart paper and markers

Setup:

  • Arrange chairs or mats in a circle so everyone can see one another.
  • Place the talking token in the center.
  • Distribute activity sheets and writing tools.

Steps

  1. Introduce the Circle (2 minutes)
    • Welcome participants to the circle and explain the goal: to learn and celebrate each other’s strengths.
    • Describe the “talking token” rule: only the person holding the token may speak, and everyone else listens respectfully.
  2. Individual Reflection (3 minutes)
    • Invite each person to think quietly and write down one personal or family strength on their activity sheet.
    • Strength ideas might include: creativity, encouragement, storytelling, organization, problem-solving, or community connections.
  3. Sharing Round (8 minutes)
    • Pass the talking token around the circle. When someone holds it, they share:
    – Their name
    – The strength they wrote down
    – A quick example of how this strength helps their child or the classroom
  4. Peer Feedback (1–2 minutes)
    • After each share, invite one or two peers to offer a positive comment or clap in appreciation.
    • Encourage brief, specific acknowledgments (e.g., “I love how your family’s storytelling helps with reading fluency!”).
  5. Record & Celebrate (1 minute)
    • On chart paper, jot down all shared strengths under the heading “Our Superpowers.”
    • Thank everyone for their contributions and highlight how this team of strengths will support learning together.

Follow-Up:
• Refer back to the “Our Superpowers” chart during the session to reinforce connections.
• Use these strengths in future family engagement activities and classroom planning.
• Encourage families to add new strengths as they discover them throughout the year.
