Civic Engagement in Action

Foster active citizenship

In this lesson, students will design and implement a civic engagement project in their community. This lesson is important as it encourages students to think critically about societal issues and collaborate to create meaningful change. By engaging in this project, students will develop a sense of responsibility and active citizenship, which are essential skills for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.

Step 1

Introduction

15 mins

  • Begin with a brief discussion on the importance of civic engagement.
  • Ask students to share any previous experiences with community projects.
  • Introduce the objective of the lesson: designing a civic engagement project.

Step 2

Brainstorming Session

30 mins

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Provide each group with post-it notes and markers.
  • Instruct groups to brainstorm community issues they are passionate about.
  • Have each group share their top three issues with the class.

Step 3

Project Design

45 mins

  • Distribute the Project Planning Worksheet to each group.
  • Guide students through the worksheet, helping them outline their project goals, target audience, and action steps.
  • Encourage creativity and feasibility in their project designs.

Step 4

Group Presentations

20 mins

  • Have each group present their project plan to the class.
  • Allow time for feedback and questions from peers.
  • Encourage constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.
