Calm Down, Power Up!

Today, we're learning how to use our calm power when we feel upset!

Use an energetic and friendly tone to introduce the lesson. Explain that everyone has big feelings sometimes and that learning how to calm down can help us feel better.

What Are Our Feelings?

Sometimes we feel mad, sad, or frustrated. These feelings help us know when we need a little break!

Explain that feelings can be both big and small and show the visual aid displaying different emotions. Ask students to name a feeling they know.

Strategy 1: Deep Breathing

Take a deep breath... In…and out... Try it with me!

Show how to use deep breathing. Use simple language with a demonstration by slowly breathing in and out.

Strategy 2: Slow Counting

Count slowly: 1... 2... 3... Let's count together and feel calm.

Introduce the slow counting strategy. Use a counting song or a fun beat to keep the pace slow and engaging.

Let’s Practice in Groups!

In your groups, take turns using deep breathing and slow counting when you pretend to be upset.

Encourage a group activity where students role-play using the strategies. Circulate to help and provide positive reinforcement.

Recap & Share

How can our calming strategies help us? Share a time you might use a deep breath or slow count.

Gather the students back together. Invite a few to share when they would use these strategies. Reinforce that it's okay to feel big feelings.

Activity

Activity: Role-Playing Calm

This activity helps you practice feeling calm when you’re upset. You will pretend to be in different situations that you might see at school. The goal is to use deep breathing and slow counting to feel better and make kind choices.

What You Will Do:

  1. Small Groups:

    • Your teacher will put you in small groups of 3-4 friends.
    • There will be enough space for everyone to act and move around.
  2. Scenario Cards:

    • Your teacher will give your group a card with a simple story. For example: "You really want to play with a toy but someone else is using it," or "You feel left out during a game."
    • Read your card together so everyone understands the situation.
  3. Role-Playing Instructions:

    • One friend will act like they feel upset.
    • The friend who is upset will take a deep breath and count slowly: "1, 2, 3…" as a way to feel calm.
    • The other friends will help by saying kind words and showing ways to solve the problem in a friendly way.
  4. Teacher's Help:

    • Your teacher will walk around and watch how everyone is doing.
    • If needed, the teacher will remind everyone to use their deep breath and slow count.
    • Your teacher will ask questions like, "How did your deep breath help you feel calmer?" and "What can we do next to be kind?"
  5. Sharing Time:

    • After you finish role-playing, come together as a class.
    • Each group can share one thing that worked well or a time when deep breathing helped them calm down.

    • Remember, when we use our calm power, we become kind helpers at school.

Have fun pretending and practicing your calm moves! Let's keep practicing to make our classroom a happy, calm place.
