Your SEL Success Map
A comprehensive, year-long, one-on-one SEL roadmap for 11th graders. Each monthly session (45 minutes) includes objectives, strategies, reflection prompts, and a family engagement activity.
August: Launch & Goal Setting
Objective: Establish rapport, identify personal strengths, and set academic & SEL goals.
Strategies:
- Introduce the Success Map and explain its purpose.
- Use a strengths assessment (e.g., 3 things I do well academically and socially).
- Co-create SMART goals for the semester (Academic, Stress, ADHD support).
Reflection Prompt:
What are my top three strengths, and how will they help me reach my SMART goals?
Family Engagement:
Share your SMART goals with a family member. Ask them to check in weekly and celebrate small wins.
September: Time Management & Organization
Objective: Develop a personalized system to track assignments, deadlines, and self-care routines.
Strategies:
- Introduce planners or digital calendars; color-code priorities.
- Break down large projects into weekly tasks (use a “priority matrix”).
- Teach the Pomodoro Technique for focus bursts.
Reflection Prompt:
What time-management strategy worked best this month, and what challenges remain?
Family Engagement:
Invite a family member to review your planner once a week and help you celebrate on-time completions.
October: Stress Management Techniques
Objective: Identify stress triggers and practice evidence-based coping skills.
Strategies:
- Create a Stress Log: note situations, thoughts, and physical reactions.
- Teach deep breathing (box breathing) and progressive muscle relaxation.
- Role-play a stressful scenario and practice coping steps.
Reflection Prompt:
Which stress-management technique did I use most, and how did it affect me?
Family Engagement:
Practice a relaxation exercise (e.g., guided breathing) together once this month.
November: Understanding Anxiety Triggers
Objective: Increase awareness of anxiety patterns and develop personalized action plans.
Strategies:
- Map out anxiety triggers (schoolwork, social situations, testing).
- Introduce the “R.E.A.L.” strategy: Recognize, Evaluate, Act, Learn.
- Practice a small exposure exercise (e.g., brief public speaking prompt).
Reflection Prompt:
What pattern did I notice in my anxiety, and what small step can I take next?
Family Engagement:
Discuss one anxiety trigger with a trusted family member and brainstorm support strategies.
December: Mindfulness & Self-Care
Objective: Establish daily self-care routines and mindfulness practices to maintain balance.
Strategies:
- Introduce a 5-minute daily mindfulness journal.
- Explore mindful movement (yoga stretch, mindful walking).
- Co-create a self-care menu: activities for energy, relaxation, and reward.
Reflection Prompt:
Which self-care activity energized me the most, and why?
Family Engagement:
Share your self-care menu with family and try one new activity together.
January: Mid-Year Reflection & Goal Adjustment
Objective: Review progress, celebrate successes, and revise goals for Semester 2.
Strategies:
- Revisit SMART goals; chart achievements and obstacles.
- Use a ‘Stop, Start, Continue’ activity for habits and routines.
- Co-develop adjusted goals or new strategies for unmet objectives.
Reflection Prompt:
What am I most proud of, and what will I adjust for next semester?
Family Engagement:
Host a mid-year check-in meeting with family to share reflections and new goals.
February: College & Career Exploration
Objective: Connect personal strengths and interests to post-secondary pathways.
Strategies:
- Complete an interest inventory (e.g., Holland Code).
- Research 2–3 colleges/careers matching interests.
- Create a pros/cons chart and draft next steps (visits, applications).
Reflection Prompt:
What college or career option excites me most, and why?
Family Engagement:
Invite a family member to help research costs, scholarships, or networking contacts.
March: ADHD Strengths & Strategies
Objective: Leverage ADHD-related strengths and implement compensatory strategies.
Strategies:
- Identify ADHD traits that aid creativity or hyperfocus.
- Explore tech aids (speech-to-text, focus apps) and physical tools (fidget, standing desk).
- Build a personalized “ADHD Action Plan” for homework and studying.
Reflection Prompt:
Which ADHD strategy improved my productivity, and how will I maintain it?
Family Engagement:
Share your ADHD Action Plan with family and ask for routine check-ins.
April: Building Support Networks
Objective: Strengthen peer, mentor, and family supports for ongoing SEL growth.
Strategies:
- Map current supports: friends, teachers, counselors, family.
- Discuss how to ask for help: scripts for reaching out.
- Role-play asking a mentor or teacher for academic/social support.
Reflection Prompt:
Who is my strongest support, and how will I engage them when I need help?
Family Engagement:
Facilitate a small family meeting where you practice asking for support in a safe space.
May: Resilience & Perseverance
Objective: Cultivate a growth mindset and techniques to bounce back from setbacks.
Strategies:
- Introduce the “Growth vs. Fixed Mindset” framework.
- Analyze a past setback: identify fixed-mindset thoughts and reframe them.
- Practice a gratitude journal focused on lessons learned.
Reflection Prompt:
What setback taught me the most, and how did I grow from it?
Family Engagement:
Ask a family member to share a personal story of resilience; discuss lessons learned.
June: Year-End Wrap-Up & Future Planning
Objective: Celebrate progress, consolidate SEL skills, and plan for summer and beyond.
Strategies:
- Create a visual timeline of growth moments and achievements.
- Develop a summer SEL continuation plan (check-ins, resources).
- Write a letter to your future self with commitments and hopes.
Reflection Prompt:
What are my top three takeaways from this year, and what will I carry forward?
Family Engagement:
Host a celebratory reflection with family, share your letter to the future, and set dates for summer check-ins.
