The Adventures of Digi-Dog: A Safety Story
Chapter 1: A New Friend Online
Once upon a time, in a cozy little town, lived a curious puppy named Digi-Dog. Digi-Dog loved to play games on his tablet. One sunny afternoon, while playing his favorite game, a message popped up: "Hello! My name is Sparky. Want to play together?" Digi-Dog was so excited! He thought, "A new friend!"
Question: Do you think Digi-Dog should tell Sparky his real name and where he lives right away? Why or why not?
Chapter 2: Keeping Secrets Safe
Digi-Dog remembered what his human, Lily, always told him: "Never share your private information with strangers online." Private information means things like your full name, your address, your phone number, or what school you go to. It's like a secret only your family and trusted adults should know.
Digi-Dog thought, "Sparky seems nice, but I don't really know him." So, Digi-Dog politely messaged back, "Hi Sparky! I'd love to play! My game name is Digi-Dog. What's yours?" He didn't tell Sparky his real name or anything private.
Question: What kind of information is safe to share online with someone you don't know in real life? What kind of information is NOT safe to share?
Chapter 3: When Things Feel Icky
As Digi-Dog and Sparky played, Sparky started saying not-so-nice things when Digi-Dog made a mistake. "You're bad at this game!" Sparky typed. Then, "Why don't you just quit?" Digi-Dog's tail drooped. His tummy felt a little bit sick. This wasn't fun anymore.
Digi-Dog remembered Lily's other rule: "If someone online says something that makes you feel sad, scared, or uncomfortable, tell a grown-up immediately." Digi-Dog stopped playing. He went to find Lily.
Question: What should Digi-Dog do next? Why is it important to tell a grown-up when someone online is not nice?
Chapter 4: Telling a Trusted Adult & The Golden Rules!
Digi-Dog found Lily and quietly told her, "Lily, Sparky was being mean to me online. It made me feel sad." Lily gave Digi-Dog a big hug. "Thank you for telling me, Digi-Dog," she said. "You did the right thing."
Lily then taught Digi-Dog the Three Golden Rules for Online Safety:
- Keep Private Information Private: Never share your real name, address, phone number, or school with anyone online you don't know in real life.
- Be Kind Online: Always be respectful to others. If someone is mean to you, stop playing or chatting with them.
- Tell a Trusted Grown-Up: If anything online makes you feel sad, scared, or uncomfortable, tell an adult you trust right away.
Lily helped Digi-Dog block Sparky in the game and reported the unkind messages. Digi-Dog felt much better. He learned that the internet is a fun place, but it's important to be smart and remember these golden rules to stay safe.
