Your Journey Begins

Introductory one-on-one counseling session for 10th and 11th Grade Students

Today’s Focus:
• Build rapport
• Explore personal strengths
• Set actionable goals

Welcome the student, introduce yourself, and explain that today’s session will focus on building trust, exploring strengths, and setting goals. Set a positive, supportive tone.

Warm-Up & Rapport Building

• Greet warmly and explain session purpose
• Use Self-Reflection Prompt Cards
• Listen actively and take notes

Spend about 5 minutes. Use the prompt cards to spark open‐ended conversation. Listen actively, validate their feelings, and jot down any initial thoughts or observations.

Self-Reflection Prompts

• What achievement are you most proud of?
• When do you feel most energized?
• What do friends or family say you excel at?
• Which challenge taught you the most?

If the student hesitates, offer a follow-up question like “Can you tell me more about that moment?” Encourage honest reflection rather than ‘perfect’ answers.

Identifying Your Strengths

  1. Open your Strengths Reflection Worksheet
  2. List three personal strengths
  3. Share real-life examples of each
  4. Reflect on why these strengths matter to you

Introduce the worksheet and guide them step by step. Ask for concrete examples and probe deeper with “How did that feel?” or “What helped you succeed?”

Setting SMART Goals

Open your Goal Setting Worksheet

SMART Goals:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Achievable
• Relevant
• Time-bound

Set 1–2 goals and outline next steps

Explain each SMART element briefly. Work together to draft 1–2 goals, then discuss specific actions, supports, and potential obstacles.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

• Review identified strengths and agreed goals
• Confirm timelines and available supports
• Schedule next check-in session
• Encourage regular review of your worksheets

Summarize the session highlights, confirm the student’s goals and deadlines, and schedule a follow-up. Remind them to revisit their worksheets regularly.

Counseling Session Script

Slide: Your Journey Begins (Title Slide)

Teacher: “Hi [Student Name], welcome! I’m glad we have this time together. Today’s session, Your Journey Begins, is all about getting to know each other better, exploring your personal strengths, and setting some meaningful goals you feel excited about. How does that sound?”

(Pause for student response and acknowledgment of their feelings.)

1. Warm-Up & Rapport Building (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Before we dive in, let’s do a quick warm-up to break the ice. I have some prompt cards here—these are just conversation starters to help me learn more about you. Feel free to answer as openly as you like.”

Teacher: “Here’s our first question from the Self-Reflection Prompt Cards:

• What achievement are you most proud of?”

(Give the student time to think and respond.)

Teacher Follow-Up Prompts (as needed):

  • “That sounds great! Can you tell me what made that achievement so special?”
  • “What strengths do you think helped you succeed in that moment?”

Teacher: “Next prompt:

• When do you feel most energized?”

(Listen actively; nod, maintain eye contact.)

Teacher Follow-Up: “What about that situation gives you energy? Is it working with others, solving problems, or something else?”

(Use one more prompt if time allows, such as “What challenge taught you the most?”)

2. Strengths Exploration (10 minutes)

Teacher: “Great sharing! Now let’s identify your top strengths with this Strengths Reflection Worksheet. You’ll list three strengths, give an example for each, and note how you felt using them.”

Teacher: “Let’s start with Strength #1. What is a personal strength you recognize in yourself?”

(Allow student to write or speak.)

Teacher Follow-Up:

  • “Can you describe a specific time when you used that strength?”
  • “How did it feel in that moment—confident, proud, relieved?”

Teacher: “Excellent. Now, move on to Strength #2. Tell me another strength you notice in yourself.”

(Repeat follow-up prompts.)

Teacher: “Finally, Strength #3. What’s your third strength?”

(Repeat follow-up prompts.)

Teacher: “You’ve identified three important strengths. Let’s reflect briefly:

  • Which of these strengths surprised you the most, and why?
  • How might you leverage these strengths to support your academic or personal goals?”

(Encourage detailed answers; validate their insights.)

3. Goal Setting (10 minutes)

Teacher: “Now that we’ve explored your strengths, let’s set a goal you can work toward. Please open your Goal Setting Worksheet. We’ll create a SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound.”

Teacher: “First, Specific: What exactly would you like to achieve?”

(Help student articulate a clear goal.)

Teacher: “Great. Next, Measurable: How will you know you’ve achieved this goal? What evidence or number will tell you you’re there?”

(Support them in defining a measurable outcome.)

Teacher: “Achievable: What makes this goal realistic for you? What resources or skills do you already have?”

(Discuss their capabilities and supports.)

Teacher: “Relevant: Why is this goal important to your growth or well-being?”

(Connect the goal to their strengths and aspirations.)

Teacher: “Finally, Time-bound: By when will you achieve this goal? Let’s pick a realistic deadline.”

(Confirm a target date.)

Teacher: “Fantastic. Now, let’s plan the Action Steps. List 2–3 concrete steps you’ll take first.”

(Offer examples if needed, such as “Step 1: Schedule a study session twice a week,” etc.)

Teacher: “What obstacles might you face, and how could you overcome them?”

(Brainstorm solutions together.)

Teacher: “Who can support you in this goal, and what resources will you need?”

(Identify people—teachers, family, peers—and tools or time.)

Teacher: “Finally, let’s set check-in dates so you can track progress and adjust if needed.”

(Agree on 1–2 dates within the next month.)

4. Wrap-Up & Next Steps (5 minutes)

Teacher: “We’re almost done! Let’s quickly review:

• Your strengths: [Student recaps strengths]
• Your SMART goal: [Student states goal and deadline]
• First action steps: [Student lists steps]

Does that capture everything accurately?”

(Confirm and clarify as needed.)

Teacher: “How do you feel about your goal and plan moving forward?”

(Validate their emotions.)

Teacher: “Our next check-in is on [Date]. In the meantime, please review your worksheets—your strengths and action plan will guide you. If you have any questions or need extra support, you can always reach out.”

Teacher: “Thank you for your honesty and hard work today. I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!”

(End on an encouraging note and confirm the next appointment.)
