Your Future, STEM-tastic! Lesson Plan

Students will be able to identify different types of careers, understand what college is, and recognize that STEM careers involve using science, technology, engineering, and math to solve problems.

Introducing these concepts early helps children develop a growth mindset, understand the purpose of learning, and encourages them to dream big about their future possibilities, especially in fields like STEM that are critical for innovation.

Audience

Kindergarten Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion, visual aids, and a hands-on activity.

Materials

Smartboard or projector, Your Future, STEM-tastic! Slide Deck, Construction paper, Crayons/Markers, Scissors (safety scissors for students), Glue sticks, and Dream Job Drawing Activity

Prep

Prepare Materials

15 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: What Do You Want To Be?

5 minutes

  • Greet students and ask them to share what they want to be when they grow up. (2 minutes)
    - Introduce the idea that there are many different jobs and that learning helps us get those jobs. (1 minute)
    - Transition to the slide deck. (2 minutes)

Step 2

Exploring Careers & College

10 minutes

  • Present slides explaining 'What is a job?' and showing various community helpers. (3 minutes)
    - Explain 'What is college?' in simple terms (a place to learn special things for special jobs). (3 minutes)
    - Introduce STEM careers with examples from the Your Future, STEM-tastic! Slide Deck, focusing on fun ways people use science, technology, engineering, and math. (4 minutes)

Step 3

Dream Job Drawing Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute materials for the Dream Job Drawing Activity. (2 minutes)
    - Instruct students to draw themselves doing their dream job, incorporating elements of what they learned. Encourage them to draw tools or settings related to their chosen career. (6 minutes)
    - Circulate and engage students in conversation about their drawings. (2 minutes)

Step 4

Share & Wrap-Up

5 minutes

  • Invite a few students to share their drawings and describe their dream jobs. (3 minutes)
    - Briefly reiterate that learning in school helps them prepare for their future jobs and that many jobs, especially STEM jobs, are about solving problems and helping people. (2 minutes)
    - Conclude by expressing excitement for their future endeavors.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Welcome students and ask them what they want to be when they grow up. Explain that today we'll explore different jobs people do and how they get there!

What is a Job?

A job is work people do to help others or make things!

Examples:

  • Doctor
  • Teacher
  • Firefighter
  • Chef

Explain that a job is something people do to help others or make things, and they usually get paid for it. Give simple examples like a doctor helping sick people or a baker making yummy bread.

What is College?

College is a special school for grown-ups!

It helps people learn big, important things for their jobs.

Introduce the idea of college as a special school for grown-ups. It's where they learn extra special skills to do certain jobs, like becoming a scientist or an engineer.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for:

  • Science (Learning about the world)
  • Technology (Making cool gadgets)
  • Engineering (Building things)
  • Math (Counting and solving puzzles)

These jobs help us solve problems and invent new things!

Introduce STEM! Explain it's a super cool way of learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. These jobs are like being a detective, a builder, or a puzzle solver!

Scientists!

Scientists explore the world!

  • They study animals, plants, and even stars!
  • They ask 'Why?' and 'How?'

Give examples of a scientist: Someone who studies animals, plants, or space. They ask 'Why?' and 'How?'

Technologists!

Technologists make cool things with computers!

  • They build games and apps.
  • They help us use phones and tablets.

Give examples of a technologist: Someone who creates apps, games, or helps computers work. They make things easier for us!

Engineers!

Engineers build amazing things!

  • They design bridges and buildings.
  • They even create robots and cars!

Give examples of an engineer: Someone who designs and builds bridges, buildings, or even roller coasters. They are problem-solvers!

Mathematicians!

Mathematicians are number whizzes!

  • They solve puzzles with numbers.
  • They help us count and measure everything!

Give examples of a mathematician: Someone who uses numbers to solve tricky problems. They help us count, measure, and understand patterns.

STEM Together!

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math jobs work together to make our world awesome!

What STEM jobs look interesting to you?

Explain that all these jobs are connected and help make our world a better place. Encourage students to think about how they already use science, technology, engineering, and math in their play.

Your Dream STEM Job!

Time to draw!

Draw yourself in your dream job. What will you do?

Show us how you'll use Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math!

Introduce the activity where students will draw their dream STEM job. Remind them to think about what they might do in that job.

Keep Learning!

Every day you learn helps you get ready for your amazing future!

What will you discover or build?

Conclude by telling students that everything they learn in school helps them for their future, and they can be anything they want to be!

Activity

Dream Job Drawing Activity

Objective

Students will creatively express their understanding of different careers, particularly STEM careers, by drawing themselves in a future job role.

Materials

  • Construction paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Safety scissors (optional, for cutting out their drawing)
  • Glue sticks (optional, for adding elements)

Instructions

  1. Introduce the Activity (2 minutes): Explain to students that they will now get to draw themselves in their dream job. Remind them of the different types of jobs discussed, including the exciting STEM careers.
  2. Brainstorming (2 minutes): Ask students to think about what kind of job they would love to do. What would they wear? What tools would they use? Where would they work? What problems would they solve?
  3. Drawing Time (15 minutes): Distribute construction paper, crayons, and markers. Instruct students to draw a picture of themselves in their dream job. Encourage them to include details that show what kind of job it is and how they might use science, technology, engineering, or math.
    • Teacher Tip: Circulate around the classroom, asking students about their drawings and prompting them to explain their choices.
  4. Optional: Cut and Glue (5 minutes): If time allows and students are able, they can carefully cut out their drawings and glue them onto another piece of paper to create a collage or a class display. This step is optional and can be skipped if time is short.
  5. Share (5 minutes): Invite students to share their drawings with the class (or in small groups). Encourage them to tell everyone about their dream job and what they would do. This helps reinforce learning and builds confidence.
