Your Future Skills Blueprint

Students will be able to identify and prioritize essential skills for navigating the complexities of the modern world and their future endeavors.

Understanding and developing future-ready skills is crucial for students to succeed in college, careers, and personal life. This lesson empowers them to proactively build these competencies.

Step 1

Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Begin with the Warm Up: Skill Spotlight. Ask students to think about one skill they believe is absolutely essential for success in today's world and why.
    * Facilitate a brief share-out, allowing 2-3 students to quickly share their chosen skill and reasoning.

Step 2

Unveiling Future Skills (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Present the Slide Deck: Your Future Skills Blueprint, focusing on slides 2-4. Introduce key future-ready skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, digital literacy, and adaptability.
    * Briefly define each skill and provide a quick real-world example of its application. Encourage students to think about how these skills are used outside of school.

Step 3

Deep Dive Discussion (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Lead a discussion using the Discussion Guide: The Future Is Now. Divide students into small groups or conduct a whole-class discussion based on class dynamics.
    * Focus on questions like: 'Which of these skills do you think is most important and why?' and 'How can we develop these skills, both in and out of school?'

Step 4

Wrap-Up & Cool Down (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Bring the class back together.
    * Distribute or display the Cool Down: My Skill Superpower. Ask students to reflect on one skill they want to develop further and a small step they can take to start working on it.
    * Collect cool-downs or have students share briefly as an exit ticket.

Explain what 'future skills' mean beyond traditional academic subjects. Highlight that they are transferable across different areas of life.

Essential Skills: Think & Solve

  • Critical Thinking: Analyzing information and making reasoned judgments. (e.g., figuring out if a news article is reliable)
  • Problem-Solving: Finding effective solutions to challenges. (e.g., troubleshooting a tech issue or a group project roadblock)
  • Creativity & Innovation: Generating new ideas and approaches. (e.g., designing a new product, coming up with a unique solution)
