Year in Review Lesson Plan

Students will reflect on their growth, memories, and achievements from the school year, articulate what they’re grateful for, and set one goal for the coming year using guided prompts.

Reflecting on accomplishments and challenges fosters self-awareness, gratitude, and goal-setting skills. This end-of-year exercise helps students recognize their growth and plan for continued success, supporting emotional and academic development.

6th Grade Students

15 minutes

Approach

Guided individual reflection followed by peer sharing and class discussion.

Materials

Year in Review Reflection Worksheet, Sticky Notes, Pencils or Pens, and Whiteboard and Markers

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Print one copy of the Year in Review Reflection Worksheet for each student
  • Gather enough sticky notes so each student can write a memory
  • Ensure pencils or pens are available for every student
  • Prepare the whiteboard and markers for class share
  • Review the Year in Review Reflection Worksheet prompts to familiarize yourself

Step 1

Warm-Up

2 minutes

  • Welcome students and explain the purpose: celebrating growth and setting new goals
  • Prompt students to think of a favorite memory from this year
  • Distribute one sticky note each and have them write that memory and post it on the board

Step 2

Individual Reflection

6 minutes

  • Hand out the Year in Review Reflection Worksheet
  • Students complete prompts:
    • My biggest accomplishment this year
    • A challenge I overcame
    • Something I’m grateful for
    • One goal for next year
  • Circulate to support students as needed

Step 3

Pair Share

4 minutes

  • Have students pair up with a classmate
  • Each shares one reflection from their worksheet
  • Partners listen and ask one follow-up question
  • Encourage positive feedback and encouragement

Step 4

Class Share & Wrap-Up

3 minutes

  • Invite 2–3 volunteers to share their goal for next year
  • Record goals on the whiteboard to inspire others
  • Thank students for reflecting and encourage them to keep their worksheets over the summer
