Welcome to a Safe Workshop!

Why is workshop safety so important?

  • Protect yourself and others
  • Prevent accidents and injuries
  • Create a productive learning environment

Think: What does 'workshop safety' mean to you?

Welcome students and introduce the importance of safety. Ask a quick warm-up question to gauge prior knowledge and engagement.

Hazard Communication: Decoding SDS

What are Safety Data Sheets (SDS)?

  • Documents with detailed info on hazardous materials
  • Essential for understanding risks and safe handling

Key Sections to Look For:

  • Identification (Product name, supplier)
  • Hazard(s) Identification (What are the dangers?)
  • First-Aid Measures (What to do if exposed?)
  • Handling and Storage (How to use safely?)

Explain what SDS documents are and why they are vital. Introduce the idea of a scavenger hunt to familiarize students with finding information.

Emergency! Know Your Exits!

Where is the Nearest:

  • Fire Extinguisher?
  • First Aid Kit?
  • Emergency Stop Button?

Always know your escape routes!

Discuss emergency procedures and visually point out the locations of emergency equipment in the actual classroom if possible.

Your Role in Safety

Personal Responsibility is Key!

  • Follow all rules and procedures
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Stay focused and avoid distractions

Your actions keep everyone safe!

Reinforce the idea of personal responsibility in maintaining a safe environment. Connect this to the handout they will receive.

Pledge to Be Safe!

Let's commit to a safe learning environment.

  • I understand the safety rules.
  • I will report hazards.
  • I will protect myself and others.

Sign your Safety Pledge Certificate and be a safety champion!

Conclude the lesson by having students commit to safety by signing the pledge. Emphasize that safety is an ongoing commitment.

Workshop Safety Rules

To ensure a safe and productive learning environment for everyone, please read and understand the following workshop safety rules. Your adherence to these rules is crucial for preventing accidents and injuries.

General Safety Procedures:

  • Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, closed-toe shoes, and hearing protection when necessary.
  • Never operate machinery or use tools without proper instruction and permission from the teacher.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor.
  • Keep your work area clean and organized. Clutter can lead to trips and falls.
  • Do not run or engage in horseplay in the workshop.
  • Always use tools for their intended purpose and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Never work alone in the workshop. An instructor or supervisor must always be present.
  • Know the location of all emergency exits, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, and emergency shut-off switches.
  • Tie back long hair, secure loose clothing, and remove dangling jewelry before operating machinery.
  • Do not bring food or drinks into designated work areas.

Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) & Safety Data Sheets (SDS):

  • Understand that all hazardous materials have a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) that provides important safety information.
  • Know how to locate and read an SDS for any chemical or material you are using.
  • Follow all instructions on the SDS regarding handling, storage, and disposal of materials.

Emergency Procedures:

  • In case of a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm and evacuate the building using the designated fire exits. Do not try to fight a large fire yourself.
  • For minor injuries, administer first aid if trained, and always report to the teacher.
  • In case of a serious injury, alert the teacher immediately and do not move the injured person unless absolutely necessary for their safety.
  • Be aware of emergency stop buttons on machinery and know how to use them.

Personal Responsibility:

  • Your personal safety and the safety of others depend on your attentiveness and adherence to these rules.
  • If you are unsure about any procedure or tool, ask your teacher for clarification.
  • Think before you act. Anticipate potential hazards and take steps to prevent them.

Review these rules carefully. Understanding and following them is your responsibility!

Reflection Question:

What is one workshop safety rule you think is the most important and why?
