Activity

Words Matter Activity: Word Impact Game

In this activity, students will participate in a fun and interactive game called the Word Impact Game. The goal is for students to see how different words can have varying impacts on people's feelings, promoting empathy and a kinder classroom environment.

How to Play

  1. Setup:

    • Arrange the classroom in a circle so everyone can see each other and participate actively.
    • Explain the rules: each student will be given a scenario and must choose a word or phrase to respond.
  2. Activity Process:

    • Present a simple scenario to the group. For example: "Imagine a friend who is feeling left out during recess."
    • Ask each student to choose a word or phrase they might say to that friend. Remind them to consider if their words are supportive or might unintentionally hurt.
    • After sharing each response, discuss briefly as a group how each response might make the friend feel. Use guiding questions such as:
      • How do you think the friend might feel hearing that word?
      • Can you suggest a kinder alternative?
  3. Empathy Building:

    • Split the class into small groups and give them new scenarios based on everyday school experiences (e.g., someone being teased, a friend feeling sad, etc.).
    • Let them act out the scenario using their chosen words, then discuss the impact as a class.

Discussion and Reflection

After the game, lead a short discussion focusing on these questions:

  • What did you notice about the difference in feelings when positive words were used?
  • How can changing even one word make a big difference?
  • What can we do to ensure our words help others feel safe and valued?

This activity not only highlights the importance of the words we choose but also gives everyone a chance to practice empathy. Keep encouraging students to think about the impact of their words in everyday situations.

Worksheet

Teasing vs. Bullying Scenarios Worksheet

This worksheet is designed to help you think carefully about different situations and decide whether the behavior described is an example of teasing or bullying. Read each scenario carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Scenario 1: The Lunchroom Comment

Imagine you are in the lunchroom and you overhear a group of friends making fun of another student’s new shoes. They laugh and call the student names.

  1. What did you hear?

  2. Do you think this is harmless teasing or bullying? Explain your reasoning.

Scenario 2: The Classroom Joke

During class, one student makes a joke about a classmate’s recent mistake on a math problem. The class joins in laughing, but the student who made the mistake looks upset.

  1. Describe what happened in your own words.

  2. Is this behavior teasing or bullying? Explain why you think so.

Scenario 3: The Repeated Name-Calling

A student is repeatedly called a mean name by a group of peers during recess. Even though some of the comments are meant as jokes, the targeted student feels hurt every time.

  1. Write down the key details that make this situation concerning.

  2. Based on what you read, would you classify this as teasing or bullying? Provide your reasons.

Reflection Question

After analyzing the scenarios, reflect on these questions:

  • What are the key differences you noticed between teasing and bullying?

  • How can understanding these differences help us create a more supportive environment at school?

Remember to think critically about the words used and how they make people feel. Your insights are important in promoting kindness and understanding in our community.
