Winter Wellness Journals

Encourage winter well-being

This lesson introduces students to the concept of maintaining well-being during the winter months through journaling. Students will be given a prompt to jot down or draw their thoughts, which can become a comforting, ongoing practice. This activity helps students reflect on their emotions and develop a habit of self-care. Additionally, the lesson will touch on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) to raise awareness and understanding.

Step 1

Introduction

3 minutes

  • Briefly discuss the importance of well-being, especially during the winter months.
  • Introduce Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as a type of depression that occurs at a specific time of year, usually in the winter.
  • Explain how journaling can be a helpful tool to express thoughts and feelings, especially when dealing with SAD.

Step 2

Journaling Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute journals or paper and pens/pencils to each student.
  • Provide the 'Winter Wellness Journaling Prompts' handout.
  • Encourage students to choose a prompt and write or draw their thoughts.
  • Remind them that this is a personal activity and they can share if they feel comfortable.

Step 3

Closure

2 minutes

  • Invite a few students to share their thoughts if they wish.
  • Encourage students to continue this practice at home to help maintain their well-being.
