Lesson Plan

Wild Old Ghostly Words

Students will be able to recognize, read, and spell words with common long VCC patterns: -ild, -old, -ind, -olt, and -ost.

Mastering these long VCC patterns is crucial for developing strong decoding and encoding skills, enabling students to read and spell a wider range of words independently.

Audience

2nd Grade, Individual

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: What's the 'Long' of It?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking the student: "Sometimes when two consonants follow a vowel, the vowel likes to pretend it's saying its long name! Today, we're going to be detectives and discover some special patterns where this happens."

Step 2

Direct Instruction: Unlocking Long VCC

10 minutes

  • Use the Slide Deck: Unlocking Long VCC to introduce and explain the -ild, -old, -ind, -olt, and -ost patterns.
    - Go through each pattern, providing examples and emphasizing the long vowel sound.
    - Have the student practice reading the example words aloud, focusing on the correct vowel sound.
    - After each pattern, ask: "What vowel sound do you hear? What letters make that sound?"

Step 3

Guided Practice: Word Hunt Challenge

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Worksheet: Long VCC Word Hunt.
    - Explain the activity: "Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find and identify words with our long VCC patterns. Read the words and circle the long VCC pattern you find. Then, try to use one of the words in a sentence."
    - Work through the first few examples together, providing support and correction as needed.
    - Circulate and offer individual feedback and assistance as the student completes the worksheet.

Step 4

Cool Down: Exit Ticket Reflection

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Cool Down: Long VCC Exit Ticket.
    - Ask the student to complete the exit ticket independently.
    - Review responses to check for understanding and identify any areas that may need further support.
