Activity

Wiggle and Giggle: Dance Freeze Activity

Overview

In the Dance Freeze Activity, students will have fun dancing to upbeat music and practicing their listening skills. When the music stops, they must freeze in their current position, which enhances their coordination and quick response times. This activity is a key component of the Wiggle and Giggle session and helps promote teamwork and individual expression in a playful environment.

Activity Instructions

  1. Music On: Begin by playing a lively tune. Encourage students to dance around freely in the open space.

  2. Freeze Time: Randomly pause the music. When the music stops, students must freeze immediately. Slow down the voices to emphasize how to freeze and hold the position briefly.

  3. Check-In: Once everyone is frozen, pick a few students (or have students come forward voluntarily) to share one thing they felt or noticed about their movement when freezing. Applaud their efforts to encourage social interaction.

  4. Repeat: Resume the music and continue the game, ensuring you vary the duration of dancing and freezing to keep the students engaged.

Discussion and Reflection

  • After several rounds, ask the students how they felt during the activity.

  • Highlight the importance of listening carefully and working as a team.

  • Encourage students to share their favorite dance move or how they quickly adjusted when the music stopped.

Tips for Success

  • Ensure the dance space is clear of obstacles to prevent injuries.

  • Mix up the song selections to match the energy levels and keep the game exciting.

  • Use positive reinforcement and praise to build confidence and social skills.

This activity not only gets the students moving but also builds essential skills such as listening, coordination, and teamwork. Enjoy and have fun with the Dance Freeze Activity!

Cool Down

Stretch and Reflect Cool-down

Overview

The Stretch and Reflect Cool-down is designed to help students wind down after the session. This cool-down involves gentle stretching and a brief reflective discussion, allowing students to relax their bodies and mind after the active portion of the lesson. It provides an opportunity for young learners to become more mindful of their movements and feelings.

Cool-down Instructions

  1. Gentle Stretches: Guide students through a series of slow, deep stretches. Use calming language to encourage them to breathe deeply and relax their muscles.

  2. Reflection Discussion: Once the stretches are complete, ask students to sit in a circle and share one thing they enjoyed or learned during the session. You might use prompts such as: "What made you smile today?" or "How did your body feel during the activity?"

  3. Mindfulness Moment: Close the session with a brief moment of silence or a guided calm breathing exercise. Encourage students to close their eyes and focus on their breathing for a few seconds.

Tips for Success

  • Keep the tone soft and supportive to create a calming atmosphere.

  • Ensure the stretching area is calm and free from distractions.

  • Validate each student's reflection to promote a positive and inclusive environment.

This cool-down not only aids in physical relaxation but also supports emotional well-being and mindfulness, reinforcing the overall objectives of the Wiggle and Giggle session.
