Why Our Brains Love Help
Students will understand that everyone's brain learns and grows differently, and that seeking support like speech or occupational therapy is a positive way to build new skills and strengthen areas of growth.
This lesson helps normalize and destigmatize the idea of receiving extra support, fostering an inclusive classroom environment where students feel safe and empowered to embrace all learning opportunities. Review Materials
10 minutes
- Review the Lesson Plan: Why Our Brains Love Help and ensure familiarity with the flow and content.
- Prepare to project the Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! onto a whiteboard or screen.
- Read through the Script: Brain Power Up! to internalize key talking points and discussion prompts.
- Ensure all necessary technology (projector, computer) is set up and working correctly.
Step 1
Introduction: Brain Warm-Up (3 minutes)
3 minutes
- Begin with a quick, engaging question to activate prior knowledge: "Imagine your brain is a super cool superpower! What's one amazing thing your brain helps you do every single day?" (Allow a few student responses).
- Transition by explaining that just like our muscles get stronger with exercise, our brains get stronger when we learn new things and sometimes, when we get a little extra help.
Step 2
Understanding 'Brain Boosters' (5 minutes)
5 minutes
- Introduce the concept of different 'brain boosters' that help us grow. Use Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! Slide 2.
- Explain that some people's brains benefit from specific types of 'coaches' or 'trainers,' like speech therapists (who help with communication) or occupational therapists (who help with daily tasks and coordination).
- Emphasize that these 'brain boosters' are about building skills, not about fixing something 'broken.' It's like a sports coach helping an athlete improve their game!
Step 3
Open Discussion: It's Okay to Grow! (5 minutes)
5 minutes
- Facilitate a brief discussion using prompts from the Script: Brain Power Up! Slide 3.
- Ask questions like: "Can you think of a time you learned a new skill and it felt tricky at first? How did you get better?" or "Why is it important to ask for help when we need it?"
- Highlight that everyone has areas where they excel and areas where they are still growing. This is normal and makes us unique.
Step 4
Wrap-Up: Super Brains! (2 minutes)
2 minutes
- Conclude by reiterating that our brains are incredible and always learning. Use Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! Slide 4.
- Remind students that getting support, whether from a teacher, a friend, or a special therapist, is a sign of strength and a commitment to becoming the best version of themselves.

Brain Power Up! 🧠
How our brains learn and grow stronger every day!
Welcome students and introduce the idea that we'll be talking about our amazing brains today.
Meet Your Brain Boosters!
Just like a coach helps athletes improve, sometimes our brains get special help too!
- Speech Therapy: Helps with talking, understanding words, and communicating clearly.
- Occupational Therapy (OT): Helps with everyday tasks, coordination, and learning new ways to do things.
These are ways to make your brain even stronger!
Explain that 'brain boosters' are like coaches for our brains. Introduce speech therapy and occupational therapy as examples of specialized 'coaches' that help specific brain skills.
It's Okay to Grow!
Think about it:
- When have you learned something new that felt tricky at first?
- How did you get better at it?
- Why is it a superpower to ask for help when you need it?
Everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way!
Facilitate a discussion about learning new skills and asking for help. Encourage students to share experiences.
Super Brains Unite!
Our brains are incredible learning machines!
Getting extra support or help to learn new skills is:
- A sign of strength 💪
- A way to grow 🌱
- Totally normal for everyone!

Introduction: Brain Warm-Up (3 minutes)
Teacher: "Good morning, super learners! Today, we're going to talk about something incredibly powerful that each and every one of you has: your brain! Imagine your brain is a super cool superpower! What's one amazing thing your brain helps you do every single day?"
(Allow 2-3 student responses, encouraging a variety of answers like reading, playing games, making friends, solving problems.)
Teacher: "Those are fantastic examples! Our brains are always working, always learning, and always growing. Just like our muscles get stronger when we exercise, our brains get stronger when we learn new things. And sometimes, just like an athlete might work with a special coach, our brains can get stronger with a little extra help too."
Understanding 'Brain Boosters' (5 minutes)
Teacher: (Display Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! Slide 2: "Meet Your Brain Boosters!") "Today, we're going to talk about what I like to call 'brain boosters.' These are special ways we can give our brains a little extra power-up to help them grow even more!"
"Has anyone ever heard of a coach who helps athletes get better at a specific sport? Well, think of brain boosters like special coaches for different parts of our brain skills."
"Two great examples of these 'brain boosters' are Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy, or OT."
"Speech Therapy is like having a coach for your communication skills. It helps people with talking clearly, understanding what others say, and expressing their thoughts and feelings. It's all about making sure your voice and words are strong superpowers!"
"And Occupational Therapy, or OT, is like having a coach for your everyday skills. This might involve things like writing neatly, staying focused, getting dressed, or even playing games. It helps us learn new ways to do daily tasks and improve our coordination."
"The most important thing to remember about these brain boosters is that they are about building skills and making our brains stronger, not about fixing something that's 'broken.' It's celebrating how unique and amazing each of our brains is!"
Open Discussion: It's Okay to Grow! (5 minutes)
Teacher: (Display Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! Slide 3: "It's Okay to Grow!") "Now, let's have a quick chat about learning and growing. I want you to think about this: Can you remember a time when you were learning a brand new skill, and it felt really tricky at first? Maybe riding a bike, learning a new math concept, or even a new video game move?"
(Allow a few students to share their experiences. Prompt them: "How did you get better at it? Did you practice? Did someone help you?")
Teacher: "Exactly! We all need practice, and sometimes we need help from others to get better. That's true for everyone, no matter how old you are. Asking for help isn't a weakness; it's a huge superpower because it shows you're ready to learn and grow!"
"Think about it, everyone in this room is good at different things. Some of you are amazing artists, some are super speedy readers, some are incredible problem-solvers. And we all have areas where we're still growing, and that's totally normal and wonderful! It's what makes us unique."
Wrap-Up: Super Brains Unite! (2 minutes)
Teacher: (Display Slide Deck: Brain Power Up! Slide 4: "Super Brains Unite!") "To wrap up, I want us all to remember how truly incredible our brains are. They are constantly learning and adapting. Getting support, whether it's from a teacher, a friend, your parents, or a special 'brain booster' like a speech or occupational therapist, is a fantastic way to make your brain even more powerful."
"It's a sign that you're taking charge of your learning journey and working to become the best version of yourself. So, let's celebrate our growing brains and all the wonderful ways we support each other to learn and shine! Give yourselves a quiet round of applause for your amazing brains!"
