Ask students: 'What's something super important that uses a lot of numbers?' Guide them to phone numbers. Ask: 'What if the digits in your phone number got mixed up? Would it still work?' Emphasize that the order or position is crucial. Show a scrambled phone number as an example.

Is 123 Main Street the same as 321 Main Street?
Why do the numbers need to be in the right spot for the mail to find you?
Transition to addresses. Ask: 'What about your house number? Does 123 Main Street mean the same thing as 321 Main Street?' Explain that the position of each digit in an address, like a phone number, changes its specific meaning and where you can find something.
What is Place Value?
Place value is the value of a digit determined by its position in a number.
Think about the number 345:
- The '3' is in the hundreds place.
- The '4' is in the tens place.
- The '5' is in the ones place.
Formally introduce place value. Define it simply: the value of a digit based on its spot in a number. Use an example like 345, pointing out the hundreds, tens, and ones places.
