Why Does My Phone Number Matter So Much?

user image

Lesson Plan

Digits in Disguise

Students will be able to identify the place value of digits in multi-digit numbers, specifically using real-world examples like phone numbers and addresses.

Understanding place value is a fundamental skill in mathematics. It helps students grasp the true value of numbers, which is essential for addition, subtraction, and more complex mathematical operations. By connecting it to real-world examples, students will see the practical importance of this concept.

Review Materials

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Mystery Number Challenge

5 minutes

  • Begin the lesson by presenting the Mystery Number Challenge Warm-Up to the class. Guide students through a quick number riddle to get them thinking about digits and their positions. (e.g., "I have a 3 in the hundreds place, a 7 in the tens place, and a 1 in the ones place. What number am I?")

Step 2

Introduction: Unlocking the Power of Position

10 minutes

  • Introduce the concept of place value using the Unlocking the Power of Position Slides.
  • Start with a discussion about phone numbers. Ask students: "Why does the order of the digits in your phone number matter so much? What would happen if we mixed them up?" This leads into the idea that the position of a digit changes its meaning and value.
  • Introduce addresses as another real-world example.
  • Define place value clearly: the value of a digit based on its position in a number.

Step 3

Activity: Phone Number Place Value Sort

20 minutes

Step 4

Independent Practice: What's My Value?

8 minutes

  • Distribute the What's My Value? Worksheet for individual practice.
  • Students will work independently to identify place values in given numbers and answer questions related to the concept.
  • Circulate and provide support as needed.

Step 5

Conclusion: Reflect and Review

2 minutes

  • Briefly review the main concept of place value.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about why the position of a digit matters.

Slide Deck

Unlocking the Power of Position

Why does where a digit sits make such a big difference?

Welcome students and introduce the day's topic: Why numbers matter where they are. Briefly explain that today we'll be detectives uncovering the 'secret' power of digits.

Your Phone Number: A Digital Secret Code

Imagine your phone number: 555-123-4567

What happens if it becomes 765-432-1555?

Why does the order matter SO much?

Ask students: 'What's something super important that uses a lot of numbers?' Guide them to phone numbers. Ask: 'What if the digits in your phone number got mixed up? Would it still work?' Emphasize that the order or position is crucial. Show a scrambled phone number as an example.

Your Home Address: Finding Your Way

Is 123 Main Street the same as 321 Main Street?

Why do the numbers need to be in the right spot for the mail to find you?

Transition to addresses. Ask: 'What about your house number? Does 123 Main Street mean the same thing as 321 Main Street?' Explain that the position of each digit in an address, like a phone number, changes its specific meaning and where you can find something.

What is Place Value?

Place value is the value of a digit determined by its position in a number.

Think about the number 345:

  • The '3' is in the hundreds place.
  • The '4' is in the tens place.
  • The '5' is in the ones place.

Formally introduce place value. Define it simply: the value of a digit based on its spot in a number. Use an example like 345, pointing out the hundreds, tens, and ones places.

Practice Time!

What is the place value of the underlined digit?

482

730

Quick check for understanding. Ask students to identify the place value of a specific digit in a new number. For example, 'What is the place value of the 7 in 729?'

Warm Up

Mystery Number Challenge

Instructions: Read the clues carefully and figure out the mystery number!

  1. I am a three-digit number.
  2. I have a 5 in the hundreds place.
  3. I have a 2 in the tens place.
  4. I have an 8 in the ones place.

What is the mystery number?

Challenge Question:

If I swapped the digits in the hundreds place and the ones place, what would my new number be?

Activity

Phone Number Place Value Sort

Goal: Work with your group to create numbers and identify the place value of specific digits.

Materials: Set of digit cards (0-9) for each group, whiteboard or scratch paper.

Instructions:

  1. Form a Number: Your teacher will call out a number of digits (e.g., "Make a three-digit number using the cards 7, 1, 4.")
  2. Arrange the Digits: Students arrange their digit cards to form the number.
  3. Identify Place Value: The teacher will then ask questions like:
    • "What digit is in the hundreds place? What is its value?"
    • "What digit is in the tens place? What is its value?"
    • "What digit is in the ones place? What is its value?"
  4. Repeat with New Numbers: Repeat the process with different numbers and digit combinations. Encourage students to explain their reasoning.

Example Rounds:

  • Round 1: Create a 3-digit number using 6, 2, 9.
    • What is the value of the 2?
    • What place is the 9 in?
  • Round 2: Create a 4-digit number using 1, 0, 5, 3.
    • What is the value of the 0?
    • Which digit has the greatest value?
  • Round 3: Create a 3-digit number that has a 7 in the tens place and a 4 in the hundreds place. (Students choose their own ones digit).
    • What is your number?
    • What is the value of the 4?
