Who Are You, Really?

Students will identify and articulate their personal strengths, core values, and current emotions to enhance their self-awareness.

Understanding oneself is fundamental for navigating challenges, building confidence, and fostering positive interactions with others. This lesson provides tools for self-reflection that empower students in their personal growth journey.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Who Are You, Really? Slide Deck and lesson plan thoroughly.
    - Print copies of the Self-Awareness Snapshot Worksheet (one per student).
    - Print copies of the My Reflection Ticket Cool Down (one per student).
    - Ensure projector/screen is set up for the slide deck.

Step 1

Introduction & Hook

5 minutes

  • Begin by displaying Slide 1 of the Who Are You, Really? Slide Deck.
    - Ask students: "Have you ever really stopped to think about who you are, beyond your name or what you look like?"
    - Explain that self-awareness is like being a detective of your own mind and heart – understanding your strengths, what matters to you, and how you feel.
    - Introduce the lesson's objective: to explore different parts of their inner selves.

Step 2

Exploring Strengths & Values

10 minutes

  • Transition to Slide 2: "My Inner Superpowers: Strengths."
    - Lead a brief discussion on what strengths are (e.g., kindness, creativity, problem-solving, leadership). Ask students to brainstorm a few of their own.
    - Distribute the Self-Awareness Snapshot Worksheet. Direct students to the 'My Strengths' section.
    - Transition to Slide 3: "My Inner Compass: Values."
    - Explain that values are the things that are most important to us (e.g., honesty, fairness, family, adventure). Provide examples.
    - Ask students to identify 2-3 values that truly resonate with them and record them on their worksheet in the 'My Values' section.
    - Facilitate a brief group share-out, encouraging volunteers to share one strength or value and why it's important to them.

Step 3

Checking In With Emotions

10 minutes

  • Transition to Slide 4: "My Inner Weather Report: Emotions."
    - Discuss how emotions are like weather – constantly changing and important to notice. Emphasize that all emotions are okay.
    - Ask students to reflect on how they are feeling right now and to identify one or two emotions, noting them in the 'My Emotions Right Now' section of their Self-Awareness Snapshot Worksheet.
    - Briefly discuss strategies for acknowledging and managing different emotions (e.g., deep breaths, talking to someone, taking a break).

Step 4

Wrap-Up & Reflection

5 minutes

  • Transition to Slide 5: "Bringing It All Together."
    - Review the concepts covered: strengths, values, and emotions. Reiterate that self-awareness is an ongoing journey.
    - Distribute the My Reflection Ticket Cool Down.
    - Ask students to complete the cool-down ticket, reflecting on one new thing they learned or realized about themselves today.
    - Collect the cool-down tickets as an exit slip.

Explain that emotions are normal and change. Help students identify their current feelings and briefly discuss coping strategies.
