  • Present a few numbers (e.g., 235, 78, 401) to gauge the student's prior knowledge.

Meet Our Number Street!

Every digit has a special place.
Just like you have a home, numbers have homes too!
Their home tells us their value.

Explain that numbers don't just sit there; they have a 'job' depending on their spot. Use an analogy like houses on a street.

The Ones Block

The first house on the right is for the 'Ones.'
It holds single items, from 0 to 9.
Example: In the number 7, the 7 lives in the Ones Block.

Introduce the Ones Place. Use single blocks or drawings to represent. Emphasize it's the rightmost spot.

The Tens Block

Next door is the 'Tens' house.
When you have 10 ones, they move here and become 1 ten!
Example: In 25, the 2 lives in the Tens Block, meaning 20.

Introduce the Tens Place. Explain how 10 ones make 1 ten. Use bundles of ten sticks or long blocks.

The Hundreds Block

Further down the street is the 'Hundreds' house.
10 tens make 1 hundred!
Example: In 345, the 3 lives in the Hundreds Block, meaning 300.

Introduce the Hundreds Place. Explain 10 tens make 1 hundred. Use flat blocks or squares to represent.

Let's Find Their Homes! (Example)

Look at the number 427.
Where does the 7 live? What's its value?
Where does the 2 live? What's its value?
Where does the 4 live? What's its value?

Show an example number and break it down. Ask the student to identify the place and value of each digit. Encourage interaction.

The Thousands Block (Bigger Homes!)

For even bigger numbers, we have the 'Thousands' house!
10 hundreds make 1 thousand.
Example: In 1,345, the 1 lives in the Thousands Block, meaning 1,000.

Introduce the Thousands Place. Briefly explain 10 hundreds make 1 thousand. Use a large cube or a group of hundreds.
