Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: What's Your Superpower?

10 minutes

  • Begin with the Unlocking Your Resume Superpowers slide deck, focusing on slides 1-2.
  • Engage students with a discussion about what makes someone unique and how those unique qualities can be their 'superpowers.'
  • Introduce the concept of a resume as a tool to showcase these superpowers to potential employers or for college applications.
  • Ask students: "What do you think makes a resume stand out?"

Step 2

Identifying Your Accomplishments

15 minutes

  • Distribute the My Accomplishment Inventory worksheet.
  • Guide students through the worksheet, encouraging them to think about various experiences (school projects, extracurriculars, volunteer work, personal achievements, part-time jobs).
  • Emphasize thinking about results and impact, not just tasks. For example, instead of "I worked at a store," think "I helped customers find products, increasing daily sales by X%."
  • Use slides 3-5 of Unlocking Your Resume Superpowers to provide examples and tips.

Step 3

Transforming Skills into Resume-Ready Statements

20 minutes

  • Introduce the Skill-to-Resume Transformer activity.
  • Explain how to take the accomplishments identified in the inventory and turn them into powerful, concise resume bullet points.
  • Model a few examples using the slide deck (slides 6-8).
  • Have students work individually or in pairs to transform 2-3 of their own accomplishments from the worksheet into resume-ready statements.
  • Circulate and provide feedback and guidance.

Step 4

Sharing and Reflecting

10 minutes

  • Ask a few volunteers to share one of their transformed resume statements with the class.
  • Facilitate a brief discussion on the power of strong action verbs and quantifiable results.
  • Distribute the One-Liner Resume Wins cool-down.
  • Have students complete the cool-down ticket, summarizing their key takeaway from the lesson.
  • Collect the cool-downs as an exit ticket.

What's Your Superpower Resume Edition?

Welcome, Future Leaders!

  • What makes you unique?
  • Why is it important to share your unique strengths with the world?

Welcome students and introduce the topic of resumes. Ask them to think about what makes them unique.

Your Resume: Your Personal Superpower Showcase!

  • A document that highlights your skills, experiences, and accomplishments.
  • Used for job applications, college admissions, internships, and scholarships.
  • Your chance to make a GREAT first impression!

Explain that a resume is like a personal marketing tool. It's their chance to show off their best self.

Finding Your Hidden Superpowers

What have you done that you're proud of?

  • School projects
  • Sports or clubs
  • Volunteer work
  • Helping at home
  • Part-time jobs
  • Any time you showed leadership or made a difference!

Transition into identifying accomplishments. Emphasize that accomplishments aren't just big awards; they're everyday actions with impact.

Beyond the Task: What's the IMPACT?

  • Instead of: "I worked at the bake sale."

  • Think: "Organized and managed a bake sale, raising $200 for our school club."

  • Instead of: "I helped my team."

  • Think: "Collaborated with teammates to develop a winning strategy, contributing to a 20% increase in team performance."

Encourage students to think about the impact of their actions, not just the actions themselves. Provide examples.

Your Mission: Accomplishment Inventory

Take out your My Accomplishment Inventory worksheet.

  • Brainstorm at least 3-5 accomplishments.
  • Think broadly! Every experience counts.
  • Focus on what you did and what resulted from it.

Give them time to brainstorm and write down their accomplishments using the worksheet.

Turning Accomplishments into Resume Gold!

The Power of Action Verbs!

  • Start each bullet point with a strong action verb.
  • Examples: Managed, Created, Developed, Led, Organized, Collaborated, Analyzed, Implemented, Achieved

Quantify Your Achievements!

  • Use numbers, percentages, or specific details to show your impact.

Introduce the idea of transforming these accomplishments into concise, powerful resume statements. Explain action verbs.

The Skill-to-Resume Transformer

Let's practice!

Original Accomplishment: "I helped tutor younger students in math."

Transformed Resume Statement: "Mentored 3-5 elementary students in foundational math concepts, resulting in an average 15% improvement in test scores."

See how we added an action verb and a quantifiable result?

Provide a clear example of how to use the 'Skill-to-Resume Transformer' activity.

Your Turn: Transform Your Superpowers!

Now, use your Skill-to-Resume Transformer sheet.

  • Pick 2-3 accomplishments from your inventory.
  • Transform them into powerful resume bullet points.
  • Remember: Action Verb + What you did + Result/Impact!

Prompt students to start working on their own transformations.

Keep Shining!

  • Your resume is a living document – it grows with you!
  • Keep adding new accomplishments as you gain experience.
  • You have unique superpowers; now you know how to show them off!

Conclude by emphasizing the importance of continuing to build and refine their resume.
