Literature Circle Roles Introduction
Students will be able to identify and describe the responsibilities of various literature circle roles and understand how each role contributes to a successful group discussion.

- Review the Literature Circle Roles Introduction Lesson Plan, Role Play Your Way to Success Slide Deck, Role Card Shuffle Activity, and My Role Pledge Worksheet.
- Print and cut out the 'Role Cards' from the Role Card Shuffle Activity (one set per small group).
- Make enough copies of the My Role Pledge Worksheet for each student.
Step 1
Warm-Up: Think-Pair-Share
5 minutes
- Begin by asking students: "What makes a good group discussion?" Allow 1 minute for individual thought, then 2 minutes for pair-share, and 2 minutes for whole-class sharing. Introduce the idea that clear roles can improve discussions.
Step 2
Introduction to Literature Circle Roles
15 minutes
- Present the Role Play Your Way to Success Slide Deck to introduce each literature circle role (e.g., Discussion Director, Literary Luminary, Connector, Word Wizard, Illustrator, Summarizer).
- Explain the responsibilities of each role clearly, using examples relevant to 9th-grade literature.
- Encourage questions and brief discussions about each role.
Step 3
Role Card Shuffle Activity
15 minutes
- Divide students into small groups (4-6 students).
- Distribute the 'Role Cards' from the Role Card Shuffle Activity to each group.
- Instruct students to read through the role cards and, as a group, discuss what they think each role entails and how it contributes to the overall literature circle.
- Facilitate a brief whole-class share-out where groups highlight one interesting aspect or question they had about a role.

My Role Pledge and Wrap-Up
10 minutes
- Distribute the My Role Pledge Worksheet to each student.
- Instruct students to choose one role that sounds interesting to them and complete the pledge, committing to the responsibilities of that role.
- Collect the worksheets as an exit ticket.
- Briefly reiterate the importance of each role in making literature circles successful and exciting.

Can you relate? Your job is to find connections between the book and your life, other books, or even current events!

Word Wizard: The Language Explorer
Got a funky word? You're on it! Find interesting or tricky words, figure out what they mean, and teach them to the group.
Introduce the Word Wizard. Explain that this role focuses on vocabulary, helping everyone understand new or interesting words.
Illustrator: The Visionary Artist
Think creatively! You can draw a scene, create a character map, or even find an image that represents a part of the book.
Introduce the Illustrator. Emphasize that this role isn't just about drawing, but visualizing and interpreting the text creatively.
Summarizer: The Story Shortener
Need a quick recap? You're the one to provide a brief overview of the reading, highlighting the main points for the group.
Introduce the Summarizer. Explain that this role keeps the group focused by providing brief overviews.

Every role is super important. When we all play our part, our literature circles will be amazing and we'll learn so much from each other!

Role Card Shuffle Activity
Objective
To familiarize students with the different literature circle roles and their responsibilities through group discussion.
Instructions
- Form Groups: Your teacher will divide you into small groups.
- Distribute Cards: Each group will receive a set of "Role Cards."
- Read and Discuss: As a group, take turns reading each role card aloud.
- Explore the Role: For each role, discuss the following questions:
- What do you think this role is responsible for?
- How does this role help the group have a better discussion?
- What challenges might this role face?
- Which part of this role sounds most interesting or challenging to you?
- Be Prepared to Share: Your group will be asked to share one interesting observation or question about a role with the whole class.

Role Card: Discussion Director
Your Job: You are the leader of the conversation! You come up with great questions that make everyone think deeply about the reading and help guide the group's discussion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare 3-5 open-ended questions about the text.
- Start the discussion with one of your questions.
- Make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
- Keep the conversation flowing and on track.
Role Card: Literary Luminary
Your Job: You are the spotlight operator! You find special passages, quotes, or important sections in the reading and share them with your group, explaining why they are significant.
Key Responsibilities:
- Choose 2-3 important or interesting passages.
- Read them aloud to your group.
- Explain why you chose them and what makes them significant.
- Listen to your group's reactions and insights.
Role Card: Connector
Your Job: You are the bridge builder! You find connections between the reading and the real world, your own experiences, other books, movies, or current events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Find 2-3 connections related to the text.
- Explain your connections to the group.
- Discuss how these connections deepen your understanding of the text.
Role Card: Word Wizard
Your Job: You are the language detective! You hunt for interesting, challenging, or important words in the reading, figure out their meaning, and teach them to your group.
Key Responsibilities:
- Select 3-5 words that are new, interesting, or important.
- Write down the page number where you found them.
- Define the words and explain their significance in the text.
- Teach these words to your group.
Role Card: Illustrator
Your Job: You are the visualizer! You create a drawing, sketch, diagram, or find an image that represents an important idea, scene, character, or symbol from the reading.
Key Responsibilities:
- Choose a part of the text to represent visually.
- Create your illustration (or find an image if approved by teacher).
- Explain your illustration to the group and why you chose that particular element.
Role Card: Summarizer
Your Job: You are the storyteller! You provide a brief summary of the main events, characters, or ideas from the assigned reading for your group.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read the assigned section carefully.
- Identify the most important events, characters, and ideas.
- Prepare a concise summary (2-4 sentences) to share with your group.
- Be ready to answer questions about your summary.
