SEL Superpower Showcase

Discover Your Social-Emotional Learning Strengths

Welcome students! Introduce today’s journey: finding our unique SEL superpowers. Explain that SEL stands for Social-Emotional Learning and helps us understand ourselves and others.

What Are SEL Superpowers?

• Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) = skills for understanding emotions & relationships
• SEL Superpower = your strongest CASEL competency
• Today: explore and celebrate each superpower

Define SEL: our ability to recognize and manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. Explain “superpower” as a special strength we each have.

Self-Awareness

• Recognizing your emotions, thoughts, & strengths
• Understanding how feelings affect behavior
• Example Superpower: “I know when to take a break to calm down”

Introduce Self-Awareness. Ask students: “How do you know when you feel happy, sad, or excited?” Encourage a student example.

Self-Management

• Managing emotions, thoughts, & behaviors
• Setting goals & handling stress
• Example Superpower: “I use breathing to stay calm before tests”

Discuss Self-Management. Prompt: “What strategies do you use to stay focused or calm?” Model deep breathing.

Social Awareness

• Showing empathy & understanding others’ perspectives
• Respecting diversity & community norms
• Example Superpower: “I notice when peers are upset and help them”

Define Social Awareness. Ask students to share a time they helped a friend feel better.

Relationship Skills

• Communicating clearly & listening actively
• Cooperating & resolving conflicts peacefully
• Example Superpower: “I work well in group projects and include everyone”

Explain Relationship Skills. Role-play greeting a new classmate politely.

Responsible Decision-Making

• Making ethical, safe, & constructive choices
• Considering consequences for self & others
• Example Superpower: “I think through options before acting”

Introduce Responsible Decision-Making. Pose a scenario: “You find a lost toy—what do you do?”

Your SEL Superpower

Which CASEL competency feels like your superpower?
• Write the name of your superpower
• Jot down one example of you using it

Prompt reflection. Give students sticky notes to write their chosen superpower and an example.

Next Steps

• Power Card Creation: Power Card Creation
• Reflection Journal: My Superpower Reflection Journal
• One-Minute Gratitude Share: One-Minute Gratitude Share

Introduce next steps: creating a Power Card and journal reflection. Remind students about peer gratitude share.
