Lesson Plan

Inner Weather Report Lesson Guide

Students will be able to identify and name different emotions within themselves, understand that emotions are fluid and can change like weather, and articulate their current emotional state using weather-related vocabulary.

Understanding our emotions is like having a superpower! It helps us know ourselves better, understand why we react the way we do, and communicate our feelings to others. This lesson will give students tools to recognize their 'inner weather' so they can navigate their feelings more effectively.

Audience

4th Grade Students

Time

45 minutes

Approach

Through a weather metaphor, students will explore and express their emotional states.

Materials

Emotional Forecast Presentation (slide-deck), Daily Emotional Thermometer Check-in (warm-up), and My Emotional Weather Map (worksheet)

Prep

Preparation Steps

15 minutes

  • Review the Emotional Forecast Presentation to familiarize yourself with the slides and teacher notes.
    - Print copies of the Daily Emotional Thermometer Check-in (one per student).
    - Print copies of the My Emotional Weather Map (one per student).
    - Ensure projector or interactive whiteboard is ready for the slide deck.

Step 1

Introduction: What's the Weather Inside?

5 minutes

  • Begin with the Daily Emotional Thermometer Check-in warm-up.
    - Ask students to share a word or two about how they're feeling, without needing to explain why.
    - Introduce the idea that our emotions can be like weather inside us. Use Slide 2 of the Emotional Forecast Presentation.

Step 2

Exploring Emotional Weather

15 minutes

  • Present the Emotional Forecast Presentation from Slide 3 to Slide 7, guiding students through different 'emotional weather' types (sunny, cloudy, stormy, rainy).
    - For each 'weather type,' discuss what it might feel like and give examples of situations that might cause those feelings.
    - Encourage students to share (if comfortable) times they have felt like 'sunny skies' or 'stormy clouds.'

Step 3

My Emotional Weather Map Activity

15 minutes

  • Distribute the My Emotional Weather Map worksheet.
    - Explain the activity: Students will draw or write about different emotional weather conditions they've experienced and what those feelings are like.
    - Circulate around the room to offer support and guidance, prompting students with questions like: 'What does a 'foggy' feeling look like for you?' or 'What makes your inner world feel 'sunny'?'

Step 4

Sharing and Reflection

8 minutes

  • Invite students to share their 'Emotional Weather Maps' with a partner or the class (voluntary).
    - Facilitate a brief class discussion using prompts: 'What did you learn about your own emotional weather today?' or 'How can recognizing our inner weather help us throughout the day?'

Step 5

Cool Down: Forecasting Tomorrow

2 minutes

  • Ask students to think about one strategy they can use to manage their 'inner weather' when it gets a little 'stormy.'
    - Collect My Emotional Weather Map worksheets.
