Lesson Plan

What's The Word?

Students will be able to identify and correctly use functional words related to common objects and actions in a group setting.

Understanding and using functional words helps students communicate their needs, follow directions, and interact effectively in their daily lives, both in and out of the classroom.

Approach

Interactive game and discussion.

Prep

Material Preparation

5 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Word Association

2 minutes

  • Begin by asking students to name common objects they see around the classroom (e.g., 'chair', 'table', 'pencil').
    - Discuss what these objects are 'for' or what we 'do' with them to introduce the idea of functional words.

Step 2

Introduce Functional Words

3 minutes

  • Display the What's The Word? Slide Deck and explain that functional words tell us what something does or what it is used for.
    - Show a few examples from the slides, like 'eat' for an apple or 'sit' for a chair.

Step 3

What's The Word? Game

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Functional Word Cards face down to the group.
    - Each student takes a turn picking a card.
    - The student identifies the object or action on the card and says a functional word related to it (e.g., if the card shows a 'ball', they might say 'throw' or 'bounce').
    - Encourage other students to suggest additional functional words.
    - Provide gentle corrections and scaffolding as needed.

Step 4

Worksheet Activity

4 minutes

  • Hand out the What's The Word? Worksheet.
    - Guide students through the worksheet, asking them to draw or write functional words for given pictures.
    - Circulate to offer individual support and check for understanding.

Step 5

Wrap-Up & Review

1 minute

  • Briefly review one or two examples from the worksheet.
    - Reiterate the importance of using functional words to clearly communicate.

What's The Word?

Words that tell us what things DO or are USED FOR!

Welcome students and introduce the topic of words that tell us what things are for.

What Are Functional Words?

They help us understand what something is FOR or what we DO with it.

Like 'eat' for an apple, or 'sit' for a chair!

Explain that functional words help us understand the purpose of objects and actions.

Let's Practice!

What do we do with this?

(Image: Spoon)

Possible answers: eat, stir

Show a picture of a spoon. Ask students: 'What do we do with a spoon?' Guide them to 'eat' or 'stir'.

Another One!

What do we do with this?

(Image: Book)

Possible answers: read, learn

Show a picture of a book. Ask students: 'What do we do with a book?' Guide them to 'read' or 'learn'.

Our Plan for Today!

  1. Play 'What's The Word?' game!
