Lesson Plan

Feeling Forecast Daily Guide

Students will be able to identify and label different emotions, recognize that emotions can change throughout the day, and connect internal feelings to observable signs in themselves and others.

Understanding and identifying emotions is a critical life skill that helps students develop self-awareness, manage their feelings, and interact effectively with others. This lesson introduces them to the dynamic nature of emotions, like weather.

Step 1

Warm-Up: My Daily Emotion Thermometer (5 minutes)

5 minutes

Distribute the My Daily Emotion Thermometer worksheet to each student.
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to think about our feelings, almost like we're checking the weather for our hearts. Take a look at your 'Emotion Thermometer.' I want you to color in how you're feeling right now. Are you feeling super happy and warm, or maybe a little bit calm and cool, or perhaps a bit cloudy? There's no right or wrong answer, just how you feel in this moment."
Briefly ask a few students to share (voluntarily) where their thermometer landed and why, encouraging them to use emotion words.

Step 2

Introduction: Weathering Our Emotions (10 minutes)

10 minutes

Display Weathering Our Emotions Slides - Slide 1 (Title Slide)
"Just like the weather outside can change from sunny to cloudy, our feelings can change throughout the day too! Today, we're going to become 'Emotion Meteorologists' and learn how to forecast our own feelings!"

Display Weathering Our Emotions Slides - Slide 2 (Emotions as Weather)
"Think about a sunny day. How does that make you feel? (Happy, joyful, bright). And what about a rainy day? (Sad, gloomy, quiet). Our feelings are a lot like this! They can be sunny, cloudy, rainy, or even a little stormy sometimes."
Discuss a few common emotions, linking them to weather concepts. For example, 'Happy' is like a sunny day, 'Sad' is like a rainy day, 'Angry' is like a stormy day, 'Calm' is like a cloudy but peaceful day.

Display Weathering Our Emotions Slides - Slide 3 (Body Clues)
"How do we know what emotion we're feeling? Our bodies often give us clues! When you're excited, maybe your heart beats fast. When you're shy, maybe your cheeks get warm. Let's think about some body clues for different feelings. What might your face look like if you're surprised? What might your hands do if you're frustrated?"
Facilitate a brief discussion, encouraging students to share physical sensations or expressions associated with different emotions.

Step 3

Activity: Cloud of Feelings Matching Game (10 minutes)

10 minutes

Divide students into small groups and distribute the Cloud of Feelings Matching Game cards.
"Now it's time for our 'Cloud of Feelings Matching Game'! In your groups, you have cards with different emotions and cards with scenarios or body clues. Your job is to match the emotion to the right scenario or body clue. Work together and talk about why you think a match works!"
Circulate among groups, providing support and prompting discussion.

Step 4

Conclusion: Sharing and Reflection (5 minutes)

5 minutes

Bring the class back together.
"Great job, Emotion Meteorologists! What was one new emotion word you learned today, or one new body clue you noticed about a feeling? Remember, it's okay for our feelings to change, just like the weather. The important thing is to notice them and understand what they might be telling us."
Encourage a few students to share their takeaways. Reiterate that all feelings are okay and it's good to identify them.
