Identifying emotions

Step 2

Direct Instruction

  • Teacher says: "Let's start by identifying some basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust."
  • Write these emotions on the whiteboard and discuss their characteristics.
  • Teacher says: "Emotions can influence our behavior and decisions. For example, feeling angry might make us act impulsively."
  • Show the Tools for Managing Your Emotions video.
  • Teacher says: "This video will give us some tools to manage our emotions better."

Step 3

Guided Practice

  • Distribute Emotion Cards to students.
  • Teacher says: "Now, let's create an emotion management plan. Think of a recent emotion you felt. What triggered it? How did you react? What could you do differently next time?"
  • Provide examples: "If you felt angry because of a disagreement, you might try deep breathing or counting to ten before responding."
  • Pair students to share and discuss their plans, providing feedback to each other.
  • Teacher says: "Discuss your plans with your partner and see if they have any suggestions for improvement."
