Step 2

Exploring Hydropower

10 minutes

  • Use the Water Wheel Wonders Slide Deck (Slides 3-5) to explain the basic components of a water paddle wheel power station: water source, paddle wheel, generator, and transmission.
    - Facilitate a brief discussion on how kinetic energy of water is converted into mechanical energy by the paddle wheel, and then into electrical energy by the generator (refer to Water Wheel Wonders Script).

Step 3

Design Challenge & Worksheet

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Water Wheel Power Up! Worksheet.
    - Challenge students to draw and label their own water paddle wheel power station, incorporating the key components discussed.
    - Encourage them to think about factors like water flow, paddle design, and generator placement.
    - Circulate and provide guidance as students work.
