Vowel Victory Sprint
Students will actively identify and differentiate short vowel sounds within CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, building foundational literacy skills.
Mastering short vowel sounds is crucial for developing strong reading and spelling skills. This lesson empowers students to confidently decode new words, improving their overall literacy and fluency.

Prep
Game Setup
15 minutes
- Review the Vowel Victory Sprint Slide Deck and familiar yourself with the game instructions. Adjust as needed for your specific classroom.
* Print and cut out the Short Vowel Word Cards. Create 5 sets of cards, one for each short vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), with at least 5-7 words per vowel sound.
* Organize your classroom into 2-4 teams, ensuring each team has a designated space to write.
* Have markers and chart paper/whiteboards ready for each team.
* Ensure a timer is accessible.
Step 1
Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

- Display the title slide of the Vowel Victory Sprint Slide Deck and welcome students.
* Teacher Script: "Welcome, vowel victors! Today, we're going on a sprint to master our short vowel sounds. Who's ready for a challenge?"
* Briefly review the five short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) and their corresponding sounds using the slide deck.
* Engage students with a quick call-and-response for each vowel sound.
Step 2
Game Rules & Team Formation (5 minutes)

- Explain the rules of the "Vowel Victory Sprint" using the Vowel Victory Sprint Slide Deck.
* Divide the class into 2-4 teams.
* Provide each team with a marker and a large sheet of paper or a mini-whiteboard.
* Teacher Script: "Here's how we'll play: I'll hold up a word card. Your team will loudly say the word, identify the short vowel sound, and quickly write down the CVC word on your team's paper. The first team to correctly identify the vowel sound and write the word earns a point!"

Vowel Victory Sprint Game Play (15 minutes)

- Begin the game. Hold up one Short Vowel Word Card at a time.
* Monitor teams for correct pronunciation, vowel identification, and spelling.
* Award points and keep track on the board.
* Encourage teamwork and clear communication.
* Vary the pace to keep students engaged.
* Teacher Tip: If a word is tricky, guide students to stretch out the sounds. "Listen carefully: b-a-g. What sound is in the middle?"

"Good morning, future word wizards! Look at our exciting title for today: 'Vowel Victory Sprint'! Who can tell me what a 'sprint' is?"
"That's right, a sprint is a fast race! And today, we're going to race to victory by showing off our amazing knowledge of... Vowels!"
"Remember, vowels are the super important letters that make all the sounds in the middle of our words. Can anyone name our five special vowels?"
"Fantastic! They are A, E, I, O, U! Let's say their short sounds together. Ready?"
- "Short 'a' says... /a/ like in apple!" (Have students repeat)
- "Short 'e' says... /e/ like in elephant!" (Have students repeat)
- "Short 'i' says... /i/ like in igloo!" (Have students repeat)

"Now for the exciting part – the Vowel Victory Sprint game! We're going to play in teams. I'm going to divide you into [NUMBER] teams: Team 1, Team 2, and so on." (Divide students into teams and have them gather with their team, making sure each team has a whiteboard/chart paper and marker.)
"Alright, listen closely to the rules! This is a race to be the first team to correctly identify and write words with short vowel sounds."
"Rule 1: I will hold up a Short Vowel Word Card with a CVC word on it, like 'cat'."
"Rule 2: As soon as you see the word, your team will work together to loudly say the word and then shout out the short vowel sound you hear in the middle of the word. For 'cat', you'd say 'cat' and then '/a/!'"
"Rule 3: Next, one person from your team will quickly write the entire CVC word on your team's whiteboard or chart paper. Make sure it's spelled correctly!"
"Rule 4: The first team to correctly say the word, identify the vowel sound, AND write the word correctly gets one point!"
