Vocabulary Voyage!

Students will be able to identify, define, and use five new academic vocabulary words in context to improve their reading comprehension and communication skills.

Expanding vocabulary is essential for 9th-grade English Language Learners to understand complex texts, express themselves clearly, and succeed in all academic subjects.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Word Web Wander

5 minutes

  1. Begin with the Warm-Up: Word Web Wander activity.
  2. Ask students to brainstorm words related to "learning" and create a word web on the board.
  3. Discuss their contributions briefly, connecting to the idea of new words.

Step 2

Introduction to New Vocabulary

15 minutes

  1. Use the Vocabulary Voyage! Slide Deck and Vocabulary Voyage! Teacher Script to introduce the five new vocabulary words.
  2. Present each word, its definition, synonyms, antonyms, and example sentences.
  3. Facilitate a brief discussion for each word, asking students to share initial thoughts or connections.

Step 3

Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt Activity

25 minutes

  1. Divide students into small groups (3-4 students).
  2. Distribute the prepared index cards with vocabulary words (one word per group).
  3. Instruct groups to use dictionaries, online resources, or their own knowledge to create a short skit, a visual representation, or a mini-story that demonstrates the meaning of their assigned word.
  4. Encourage creativity and collaboration.
  5. Have each group present their work to the class. Encourage other students to guess the word if it's a skit or drawing.

Vocabulary Practice Worksheet

10 minutes

  1. Hand out the Vocabulary Practice Worksheet.
  2. Instruct students to complete the worksheet individually.
  3. Circulate the room to provide support and answer questions.
  4. If time permits, review answers as a class using the Vocabulary Practice Answer Key or collect for grading.

  1. Conclude the lesson with the Cool-Down: My New Word activity.
  2. Ask students to write down one new word they learned and how they plan to use it.
  3. Have a few students share their responses.
