Introduction & Hook: What's a Word Worth? (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going on an exciting adventure with words! Has anyone ever felt confused while reading a book because of a word you didn't know? Or maybe you wanted to explain something but couldn't find the right word?"

Teacher: "That's okay! Learning new words is like gaining superpowers for our brains! The more words we know, the better we can understand what we read and the clearer we can be when we talk and write. Look at our Vocabulary Power Map Slide Deck as we get started!"

Teacher: "Today, we're going to learn a super cool strategy called a 'Concept Definition Map.' It's a special way to really dig deep into a word and understand everything about it. Our goal is to define these words, find words that mean the same and the opposite, and use them in sentences. By the end of this lesson, you'll be vocabulary superstars!"

Modeling Concept Map: 'Boycott' (20 minutes)

Teacher: "Let's try our first word together. Our first word is Boycott. Take a look at it on our Vocabulary Power Map Slide Deck. Has anyone heard this word before? What do you think it means?"

Teacher: "Great ideas! A boycott means to refuse to buy, use, or participate in something as a way of protesting. For example, if students didn't like the cafeteria food, they might decide to boycott the cafeteria by bringing their own lunches."

Teacher: "Now, what part of speech do you think 'boycott' is? Can it be a verb, an action word, or a noun, a naming word?"

Teacher: "Exactly! It can be both! You can boycott something (verb), or there can be a boycott (noun)."

Teacher: "What are some words that mean similar things to 'boycott'? These are called synonyms."

Teacher: "Excellent! Words like 'reject,' 'avoid,' 'ban,' or 'shun' are good synonyms."

Teacher: "Now, for antonyms – words that mean the opposite of 'boycott'. If you're not boycotting something, what are you doing?"

Teacher: "That's right! 'Support,' 'endorse,' 'patronize,' or 'welcome' would be antonyms."

Teacher: "Finally, let's use 'boycott' in a sentence. Who can give me a sentence using the word boycott?"

Teacher: "Fantastic! The students decided to boycott the cafeteria until they served pizza every Friday. See how we filled out our concept map for 'Boycott'? This is what you'll be doing on your Vocabulary Power Map Worksheet."

Guided Practice: 'Encouragement' and 'Fulfill' (25 minutes)

Teacher: "Alright, now I'm going to hand out your Vocabulary Power Map Worksheet. We'll work on the next two words, Encouragement and Fulfill, together. You can write your answers on your worksheet as we go."

Teacher: "Let's look at Encouragement. What comes to mind when you hear this word? When have you given or received encouragement?"

Teacher: "Think about someone giving you a pep talk or cheering you on. What's the definition of encouragement?"

Teacher: "Yes, it's the act of giving someone support, confidence, or hope. What part of speech is 'encouragement'?"

Teacher: "That's right, it's a noun. What are some synonyms for 'encouragement'?"

Teacher: "How about antonyms, words that mean the opposite?"

Teacher: "Now, let's write a sentence using 'encouragement' on your worksheet. Remember, you can look at the Vocabulary Power Map Slide Deck for ideas or to check your work."

(Repeat similar guided questions for 'Fulfill'.)

Teacher: "Okay, let's move on to Fulfill. What does it mean to fulfill something?"

Teacher: "Right! To bring something to completion or to satisfy a requirement. What part of speech is 'fulfill'?"

Teacher: "It's a verb! What are some synonyms for 'fulfill'?"

Teacher: "And antonyms?"

Teacher: "Great! Now, write a sentence for 'fulfill' on your worksheet."

Independent Practice: Remaining Vocabulary Words (25 minutes)

Teacher: "You're doing wonderfully! Now it's your turn to be independent vocabulary detectives! You'll work on the remaining words on your Vocabulary Power Map Worksheet: Injustice, Mistreated, Protest, Qualified, and Registered."

Teacher: "Remember to think about the definition, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and a sentence for each. If you get stuck, try to remember how we worked through the first few words. I'll be walking around to help if you have any questions."

(Circulate and provide individual support. Encourage students to use their best guess and then double check if unsure.)

Wrap-up & Share: My Favorite New Word (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Alright, everyone, pencils down! Great job exploring these new words. Let's come back together."

Teacher: "Who would like to share one of the new words they learned today and tell us why they found it interesting, or a sentence they wrote?"

Teacher: "Thank you for sharing! Let's quickly review a couple of words. Can someone tell me what Injustice means?"

Teacher: "How about Qualified?"

Teacher: "Excellent! Remember, the best way to make these words truly yours is to keep using them. Look for them in your books, and try to use them when you're talking with friends or writing stories. Your worksheets will be collected, and I'll be looking forward to seeing all the amazing vocabulary you've learned!"
