Word Detectives Challenge
Students will be able to define and use new vocabulary words in context, identify unknown words using context clues, and creatively express their understanding of new words.
A strong vocabulary is essential for effective communication. This lesson helps students enhance their reading comprehension, improve their writing, and speak with greater confidence.

Teacher Preparation
15 minutes
- Review the Super Word Builders Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
- Print and cut out the Vocab Charades & Pictionary Game Cards.
- Print enough copies of the Context Clues Investigator Worksheet for each student.
- Ensure projector/Smartboard is set up and working.
- Review all generated materials as needed.
Step 1
Introduction: The Power of Words
5 minutes
- Begin by displaying the first slide of the Super Word Builders Slide Deck.
- Ask students: "What do you think 'vocabulary power' means?" (Allow a few student responses).
- Explain that having a strong vocabulary is like having a superpower! It helps us understand what we read, write better, and express ourselves clearly.
- Introduce the day's objective: We're going to become 'Word Detectives' and 'Super Word Builders' today!
Step 2
Exploring New Words with 'Super Word Builders'
15 minutes
- Advance through the Super Word Builders Slide Deck, introducing 3-4 new vocabulary words.
- For each word:
- Display the word and its definition.
- Show an example sentence.
- Ask students to create their own sentence using the word (call on a few volunteers).
- Discuss synonyms and antonyms if applicable.
- Encourage students to think about how these words connect to their own lives.
Step 3
Vocab Charades & Pictionary Challenge
15 minutes
- Divide the class into two teams.
- Explain the rules of Vocab Charades & Pictionary: One student from a team picks a card, and either acts out (Charades) or draws (Pictionary) the vocabulary word for their team to guess.
- The team that guesses correctly earns a point.
- Rotate turns between teams and activities (Charades/Pictionary).
- Emphasize good sportsmanship and having fun while learning!
Step 4
Context Clues Investigator Worksheet
8 minutes
- Hand out the Context Clues Investigator Worksheet.
- Explain that good word detectives can often figure out the meaning of a new word by looking at the words around it – these are called 'context clues.'
- Instruct students to complete the worksheet independently, using the context clues in each sentence to determine the meaning of the underlined word.
- Circulate to provide support and answer questions.

Wrap-up and Share
2 minutes
- Briefly review the answers to the Context Clues Investigator Worksheet as a class.
- Ask students to share one new word they learned today or one new thing they learned about vocabulary.
- Reiterate the importance of using new words in their reading, writing, and speaking.

- Synonyms: Sparkle, shine, twinkle
- Antonyms: Darkness, dullness
Introduce the second vocabulary word. Read the definition and example sentence aloud. Ask students to share their own sentences.
Word 3: Avid
Avid (adj.)
- Definition: Having or showing a keen interest in or enthusiasm for something.
- Example: My brother is an avid reader; he finishes a book every week.
- Think: What are you avid about?
- Synonyms: Enthusiastic, keen, eager
- Antonyms: Indifferent, unenthusiastic

Word 4: Serene
Serene (adj.)
- Definition: Calm, peaceful, and untroubled.
- Example: The lake was perfectly still and serene at sunrise.

- Antonyms: Agitated, turbulent, chaotic

Vocab Charades & Pictionary Challenge!
Instructions:
- Divide into two teams.
- One player from the guessing team picks a card.
- Decide as a team if you want to perform Charades (act it out, no talking!) or Pictionary (draw it, no letters or numbers!).
- Your team has 1 minute to guess the word.
- If guessed correctly, your team gets a point! If not, the other team can steal by guessing once.
