Students will learn foundational drawing techniques, develop observation skills, and gain control over various drawing mediums, enabling them to confidently express themselves through art.

Drawing is a fundamental skill that enhances creativity, problem-solving, and visual communication. This lesson will equip students with the basic techniques to confidently express themselves through art and build a strong foundation for future artistic endeavors.

Unlocking Your Sketchbook Slide Deck, Unlocking Your Sketchbook Script, Drawing Warm-Up: Blind Contour Challenge, Observational Drawing Activity: Still Life Exploration, Sketchbook Reflection Cool Down, Sketchbooks or Drawing Paper, Pencils (various hardness if available), Erasers (kneaded and vinyl), Charcoal sticks (optional), Pastels (optional), and Still life objects (everyday items like fruit, bottles, draped fabric)

Step 1

Warm-Up: Blind Contour Challenge

15 minutes

  1. Begin with the Drawing Warm-Up: Blind Contour Challenge activity.
  2. Instruct students to find a partner and sit facing each other without looking at their paper.
  3. Students will draw their partner's face/profile without lifting their pencil or looking at their paper for 5 minutes.
  4. Discuss observations and challenges as a class.

Step 2

Introduction to Foundational Drawing

10 minutes

  1. Use the Unlocking Your Sketchbook Slide Deck and Unlocking Your Sketchbook Script to introduce foundational drawing concepts.
  2. Discuss line, shape, form, texture, value, and space.
  3. Emphasize the importance of observation in drawing.

Step 3

Demonstration: Basic Techniques

15 minutes

  1. Demonstrate basic drawing techniques using a simple object (e.g., an apple).
  2. Show how to sketch light guidelines, build up forms with basic shapes, and apply value.
  3. Highlight techniques for shading, blending, and creating different textures with pencils and erasers.

Step 4

Guided Practice: Exploring Mediums

25 minutes

  1. Provide students with drawing materials (pencils, erasers, optional charcoal/pastels).
  2. Guide students through a series of short exercises, focusing on one element at a time (e.g., drawing different types of lines, practicing shading scales, creating basic geometric forms).
  3. Circulate the room, offering individual feedback and assistance.

Step 5

Independent Practice: Still Life Exploration
