Unleash Your Inner Artist!

Students will identify at least three different careers artists pursue and describe how artists contribute to society.

Understanding diverse art careers helps students connect their creativity to future possibilities, fostering self-expression and appreciation for the arts in the world around them.

Prepare Materials

Step 1

Introduction & Hook

10 minutes

  • Engage: Begin by asking students the questions on the first slide of Artist Career Slides: "What comes to mind when you hear the word 'artist'?" and "What kind of art do artists make?"
  • Record their answers on the whiteboard. Explain that today, they will explore different types of artists and how their work impacts the world.

Step 2

Exploring Artist Careers

15 minutes

  • Present: Use the Artist Career Slides to introduce various art careers (e.g., painter, sculptor, illustrator, graphic designer, animator, fashion designer, architect, game designer, chef).
  • For each career, briefly explain what they do and show visual examples (if possible, on the slides).
  • Discuss: Ask students if they have seen art related to these careers in their daily lives.

Step 3

Art Career Exploration Worksheet

15 minutes

  • Distribute: Hand out the Art Career Exploration Worksheet to each student.
  • Instruct: Explain that they will choose two to three artist careers they learned about and write or draw what those artists create and where we might see their art.
  • Facilitate: Circulate around the room, providing support and answering questions. Encourage students to think creatively.

Step 4

My Art Career Activity

15 minutes

  • Introduce: Explain that now it's their turn to imagine being an artist using the My Art Career Activity Guide.
  • Distribute: Provide drawing paper and art supplies.
  • Instruct: Students will draw themselves as an artist in their chosen career, showing what they create. They should also write a sentence or two describing their art and how it helps or affects others.
  • Create: Play some light, inspiring music as students work on their masterpieces.
