Understanding Emotions

Recognize and manage emotions

Students will explore different emotions, how to recognize them in themselves and others, and strategies for managing them. This lesson is important as it helps children develop critical emotional intelligence skills which are fundamental for their social interactions and personal well-being.

Step 1

Introduction to Emotions

10 mins

  • Begin with a brief discussion on what emotions are.
  • Ask students to name different emotions they know and write them on the whiteboard.
  • Explain that everyone experiences a range of emotions and it's normal.

Step 2

Recognizing Emotions

15 mins

  • Hand out post-it notes and pens to each student.
  • Ask students to write down an emotion they felt recently and stick the post-it note on the whiteboard.
  • Discuss as a class why they felt those emotions and how they recognized them.
  • Provide examples of physical and emotional cues for recognizing different emotions.

Step 3

Emotional Scenarios Activity

20 mins

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Distribute the "Emotional Scenarios" worksheet.
  • Each group will read different scenarios and discuss what emotions the characters might be feeling and why.
  • Walk around to facilitate discussions and provide examples if needed.

Step 4

Strategies for Managing Emotions

10 mins

  • Return to the large group and discuss different strategies for managing emotions.
  • Provide examples like deep breathing, counting to ten, or talking to a friend.
  • Ask students to share their own personal strategies and write them on the whiteboard.

  • Summarize the key points discussed in the lesson.
  • Encourage students to use the strategies they learned when they feel strong emotions.
