Slide Deck

Understanding Consequences

Every choice creates a ripple effect.

Welcome the student. Introduce the topic of consequences and its relevance to their daily life. Ask them to think about a small decision they made recently and its immediate outcome.

Positive & Negative Ripples

What are consequences?

  • The result or effect of an action or condition.

They can be:

  • Positive: Good outcomes that encourage similar actions.
  • Negative: Undesirable outcomes that discourage similar actions.

Explain that consequences aren't always negative. They can be positive too. Give a quick example of a positive consequence from a good choice.

The Ripple Effect of Choices

Just like a pebble dropped in water, your choices create ripples that spread out.

  • Immediate vs. Long-Term
  • Direct vs. Indirect

Introduce the idea of 'The Ripple Effect' as a metaphor for how consequences spread. Explain that sometimes consequences are immediate, and sometimes they appear later.

Your Journey of Reflection

Today, we'll explore how your choices shape your world through reflection and discussion.

  • Read about how consequences work.
  • Journal about your own experiences.
  • Understand personal accountability.

Explain that this lesson is about exploring their own choices and consequences. Introduce the journal as a tool for personal reflection.

Journal

My Consequence Journal

This journal is a space for you to reflect on your actions and their consequences. Be honest with yourself and explore the connections between what you do and what happens.

Prompt 1: A Recent Choice

Think about a choice you made recently (in the last few days). Describe the choice, what led you to make it, and what happened as a direct result. Was the consequence expected or unexpected?

Prompt 2: Positive Outcomes

Describe a time when a choice you made led to a positive consequence, for yourself or for someone else. How did that outcome make you feel? What did you learn from that experience?

Prompt 3: Learning from the Less-Than-Positive

Think about a choice you made that led to a negative or challenging consequence. What was the situation, the choice, and the outcome? What did you learn from this experience, and how might you approach a similar situation differently in the future?

Prompt 4: The Future Ripple

Consider a goal you have for the near future. What choices will you need to make to achieve that goal? What are the potential positive and negative consequences of those choices? How will you hold yourself accountable?
