Lesson Plan

Social Skills Tracker Plan

Students will learn to use a weekly social skills data collection sheet to track peer interactions, set a personal social goal, and celebrate progress.

By monitoring social behaviors in real time, students build self-awareness, practice positive interactions, and take ownership of their social growth.

Audience

2nd Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Demonstrate, practice with partners, and reflect with goal setting.

Materials

Social Skills Data Collection Sheet, Sample Completed Social Skills Tracker, Projector or Smartboard, Chart Paper, Markers, Pencils, and Crayons

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Print one copy of Social Skills Data Collection Sheet per student
  • Create a large blank tracker on Chart Paper for projection and group discussion
  • Pre-fill an example on Sample Completed Social Skills Tracker for modeling
  • Gather Pencils, Crayons, and Markers
  • Test the Projector or Smartboard for displaying materials

Step 1

Introduction to Social Superpowers

5 minutes

  • Greet students and introduce the concept of "social superpowers" as the positive behaviors they practice with friends
  • Display the blank Social Skills Data Collection Sheet on the projector or chart paper
  • Ask: “What makes someone a good friend?” Record student responses on chart paper
  • Explain that today they’ll track these friendly behaviors using their own sheet

Step 2

Modeling the Tracker

8 minutes

  • Show the class the Sample Completed Social Skills Tracker
  • Explain each column: behavior, tally marks, total count, and weekly goal
  • Role-play a scenario (e.g., sharing materials) and mark it live on the blank sheet
  • Demonstrate how to tally behaviors and compare to a goal at the end of a session

Step 3

Guided Practice

10 minutes

  • Pair students and assign a simple role-play (e.g., taking turns or using kind words)
  • Give each pair a blank Social Skills Data Collection Sheet
  • In roles, partners practice the behavior while the other tracks it
  • Circulate to support accurate tallying and positive feedback
  • Encourage students to switch roles halfway through

Step 4

Reflection and Goal Setting

7 minutes

  • Gather students and invite volunteers to share one behavior they tracked successfully
  • Ask: “How did it feel to see your tally grow?”
  • Have each student write a personal goal at the bottom of their sheet (e.g., “I will share with 3 friends”) using Crayons
  • Reinforce that they’ll use this sheet all week to celebrate progress and set new targets

Slide Deck

Track Your Social Superpowers

A 30-minute lesson for 2nd graders
Learn to use a weekly social skills data collection sheet
Monitor behaviors, set goals, and celebrate progress

Welcome students and introduce the session: “Track Your Social Superpowers.” Explain that today they’ll learn how to use their social skills tracker to monitor friendly behaviors.

Today’s Objective

• Learn to use the Social Skills Data Collection Sheet
• Track friendly behaviors in real time
• Set a personal social goal for the week
• Celebrate progress with tally marks

Read the objective slide aloud and ask students why knowing our goals helps us succeed.

What Makes a Good Friend?

• Shows kindness
• Shares with others
• Listens and takes turns
• Uses kind words
• Helps when someone is sad

Pose the question and record student answers on chart paper. Highlight key ideas like kindness, sharing, and listening.

Your Blank Tracker

Social Skills Data Collection Sheet

Columns:
• Behavior
• Tally Marks
• Total Count
• Weekly Goal

Display the blank sheet on the projector or chart paper. Point out each area where students will write behaviors, tally marks, total counts, and goals.

Sample Completed Tracker

Sample Completed Social Skills Tracker

Notice:
• Behaviors listed (e.g., sharing, kind words)
• Tally marks added during activity
• Total count at the end
• Goal checked off

Show the completed example. Explain how each behavior is tallied and compared to a goal.

Modeling the Tracker

  1. Role-play a friendly behavior
  2. Count each instance aloud
  3. Add tally marks to your sheet
  4. Compare total to our goal

Role-play a scenario (e.g., sharing crayons). Invite one student to act, then mark a tally on the blank tracker as a class.

Guided Practice

• Pair up and choose a behavior to role-play
• One student acts, the partner tracks with tally marks
• Switch roles after 2 minutes
• Practice taking turns and giving feedback

Explain the pair practice. Remind students to switch roles halfway and to help each other tally correctly.

Reflection & Goal Setting

• Share one behavior you tracked
• Discuss how it felt to see your tally grow
• Write a personal goal (e.g., “I will share with 3 friends”) at the bottom of your sheet
• Use this tracker all week to celebrate progress!

Bring class back together. Invite volunteers to share their tallies and feelings. Guide them to write a personal goal at the bottom of their sheet.
