Tokens for Treats!

Students will understand how an economy token board works, identify positive behaviors to earn tokens, and practice exchanging tokens for desired rewards.

This lesson helps Pre-K students develop self-regulation, understand consequences, and encourages positive behavior through a visual and tangible reward system. It's a foundational step for promoting independence and successful classroom participation.

Token Board Lesson Script

Introduction: What are Tokens? (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something super exciting: earning rewards! Does anyone know what a reward is? What makes you feel happy or proud?"


Teacher: "That's right! A reward is something special you get for doing something good. Today, we're going to learn about 'tokens.' Tokens are like special points we can earn for making great choices and trying our best!"

Introducing the Token Board (10 minutes)

Teacher: "Look at this special board!" (Hold up your physical token board example or point to the slide deck.) "This is called a Token Board! It helps us see how many tokens we've earned. See these empty spaces? That's where our tokens will go! And look here, this spot says 'I'm Working For'. This is where we put a picture of the reward we really want to earn!"

Teacher: "So, how do we earn these awesome tokens? It's simple! We earn tokens by making good choices. For example, if you are sitting nicely during circle time, you might earn a token! If you are listening quietly when I'm talking, you might earn a token!"

(Distribute individual token boards and some tokens to each student. Engage them in a short, simple activity like coloring a picture or stacking blocks. Observe and provide tokens as appropriate, verbally reinforcing the behavior.)

Teacher: "Wow, I see some excellent listening! Here's a token for your board, [Student Name]!" (Place a token on their board.) "Great job focusing on your coloring, [Student Name]! Another token for you!"

Choosing Rewards (3 minutes)

Teacher: "Look at your boards! When you fill up all your token spaces, it means you've earned your reward! Now comes the fun part: choosing your treat!"
