Think Positive Activity: Thought Replacement Workshop

Overview

In this activity, students will work together in small groups to identify personal negative thoughts and practice replacing them with positive affirmations. This hands-on and reflective exercise is designed to build self-compassion and resilience, empowering students to shift their mindset towards a more positive outlook.

Activity Steps

1. Introduction (3 minutes)

  • Briefly discuss the concept of negative thought patterns vs. positive self-talk.
  • Explain why replacing negative thoughts can make us feel more empowered and confident.

2. Small Group Brainstorming (7 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups. Each group should have a quiet space for discussion.
  • Provide each group with prompts and guiding questions such as:
    • What are some negative thoughts you sometimes have about yourself?
    • How do these thoughts affect your mood or actions?
    • What positive statements or affirmations might counter these negative thoughts?

(Students record a few negative thoughts and corresponding positive reframe phrases; encourage note-taking.)

3. Reflection and Sharing (5 minutes)

  • Bring the groups back together for a class discussion.
  • Ask for volunteers to share one negative thought they identified and the positive replacement they came up with.
  • Highlight that while each thought is unique, the goal is to empower each other by focusing on positive, realistic alternatives.

4. Closing Remark (Optional Extension)

  • Encourage students to practice this method when they notice negative self-talk during their day.
  • Optionally, inform them about the Daily Positivity Tracker for self-monitoring.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard or chart paper for group sharing.
  • Pens and paper for each group.

Teacher's Reflection

After the session, take a few minutes to reflect on:

  • How did the groups interact?
  • Were students able to identify and articulate their negative thought patterns?
  • What were the common themes or affirmations that emerged?

This activity serves as an important step in fostering a growth mindset and promoting emotional well-being among students. Adapt discussions and prompts as necessary to best fit your classroom dynamics.

Discussion

Discussion: Sharing Success Stories

This discussion session is designed to create a safe and supportive space where students can reflect on and share their personal experiences with shifting from negative thought patterns to positive self-talk. The goal is to celebrate small wins and learn from each other's journeys.

Guidelines for the Discussion

  • Respect: Listen attentively to others without interrupting. Everyone's experience is unique and valuable.

  • Confidentiality: What is shared in the group stays in the group to maintain trust and safety.

  • Positivity: Focus on uplifting messages and constructive feedback. Encourage one another by recognizing the courage in sharing personal challenges.

  • Participation: While sharing is voluntary, every student’s contribution is valuable. If you're comfortable, share your story or a success, no matter how small.

Discussion Questions

1. Reflecting on the Thought Replacement Workshop

  • What negative thought did you identify, and what positive replacement did you choose?

  • How did you feel before and after replacing the negative thought?

  • Did you notice any immediate changes in how you thought about yourself?

2. Learning from Others' Experiences

  • Can you share a success story where positive self-talk helped you overcome a challenge?

  • What did you hear in someone else's story that inspired you?

3. Building a Positive Habit

  • How can you continue to practice and reinforce positive self-talk outside the classroom?

  • What strategies or tools (like the Daily Positivity Tracker) can you use to support your practice?

Follow-Up Points

  • Sharing Tips: Remind participants to share specific examples or moments when they felt a shift in their mindset.

  • Encouragement: Encourage group members to offer supportive comments or suggestions based on their own experiences.

  • Action Planning: Have students commit to one positive self-talk practice they will try over the next week and, if comfortable, share that commitment with the group.

By creating an open forum to share success stories, this discussion aims to foster community, reinforce positive behaviors, and empower students to continue the practice of positive self-talk in their daily lives.
