Script
Coaching Conversation Script
Introduction (2 minutes)
Teacher: “Hi [Student Name], I’m excited to meet with you one-on-one today. We’re going to discover your self-management superhero powers! Our goal is to identify what you already do well, set a goal to grow even more, make a simple action plan, and decide how you’ll track your progress. Sound good?”
[Pause and let the student respond. Offer a smile and nod.]
Teacher: “Great! Let’s dive in.”
Identify Strengths (5 minutes)
Teacher: “Think back to a moment when you felt really in control of your behavior or emotions—like you were your own hero. Can you tell me about one time that stands out?”
[Listen attentively. Nod and maintain eye contact.]
Teacher: “That’s awesome. What exactly did you do in that moment that helped you stay calm or focused?”
[Allow response. Paraphrase back briefly.]
Teacher: “I love how you did [student’s strategy]. What about a second time you felt like that?”
[Encourage a second example.]
Teacher: “And a third time? Feel free to pick any situation—big or small.”
[After third example, summarize strengths.]
Teacher: “So you noticed you can pause and take deep breaths, remind yourself of your plan, and ask for help when you need it. Those are powerful self-management strengths!”
Set a Self-Management Goal (5 minutes)
Teacher: “Now let’s pick one habit to work on next. We’ll use SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. I’ll explain each term, and you help me shape your goal.”
Teacher: “First, Specific: What exactly do you want to do? For example, instead of ‘stay focused,’ you might say, ‘review my homework planner every day.’ What specific habit interests you?”
[Guide student to name the habit.]
Teacher: “Next, Measurable: How will you know you’re doing it? Will you mark a checkbox, count minutes, or track streaks?”
[Help student choose a measure.]
Teacher: “Achievable: Is this something you can really do every day or week? If today is Tuesday, could you start now?”
[Confirm realism.]
Teacher: “Relevant: Why does this matter to you? How will it help you as a student or person?”
[Invite reflection.]
Teacher: “Time-bound: When will you reach this goal? Can we pick a date one month from now?”
[Set a deadline.]
Teacher: “Let’s put it all together. Your SMART goal is: ‘[Repeat student’s goal exactly].’ Does that sound right?”
[Have the student copy the goal into the journal: My Superpower Log.]
Develop Action Plan (4 minutes)
Teacher: “To reach that goal, what are two or three specific steps you can take daily or weekly? For instance, setting a phone reminder or pairing your new habit with something you already do. What ideas do you have?”
[Brainstorm with the student. Offer suggestions if needed: “Maybe after dinner you spend five minutes updating your planner, or you check off your habit each morning.”]
Teacher: “Great ideas. Let’s pick these steps:
- [Student’s Step 1]
- [Student’s Step 2]
- [Student’s Step 3]
Please write these in your Superpower Log.”
Wrap-Up & Next Steps (4 minutes)
Teacher: “You’ve done fantastic work today. Let’s review your goal and action steps one more time.”
[Read aloud the goal and steps, confirming accuracy.]
Teacher: “You’ll log your progress in your Superpower Log each day and reflect on how it feels. When should we check in again? Would one week from now work?”
[Agree on a follow-up date and write it in the journal.]
Teacher: “Remember, you are the hero of your own growth. I believe you can do this. I’m here to support you every step of the way. Well done!”
[End with a high-five or a thumbs-up gesture.]
