The Problem-Solving Circle

Develop problem-solving skills

In this lesson, kindergarten students will participate in a 'Problem-Solving Circle' where they will sit in a circle and take turns sharing problems they face, while their peers offer advice and solutions. This activity is important as it helps young students develop empathy, communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills, which are essential for their social and emotional development.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Gather students in a circle on the floor.
  • Explain the purpose of the activity: to share problems and help each other find solutions.
  • Introduce the 'talking stick' or soft ball, which will be passed around to indicate whose turn it is to speak.

Step 2

Problem-Solving Circle

20 mins

  • Begin the activity by holding the talking stick and sharing a simple problem (e.g., "I sometimes feel sad when it's rainy outside.").
  • Pass the talking stick to the next student and encourage them to share a problem.
  • After a student shares, invite others to offer advice or solutions.
  • Continue around the circle, ensuring each student has a chance to speak and contribute.

  • Conclude the activity by thanking students for their participation and sharing.
  • Discuss as a group how it felt to share and help each other.
  • Reinforce the importance of listening and supporting one another.
