The Kindness Compass: Navigating Our Actions

Students will be able to identify kind actions and words and demonstrate kindness towards others in various scenarios.

Understanding and practicing kindness helps create a positive and supportive classroom and school environment. It fosters empathy, improves social-emotional well-being, and teaches children valuable life skills for interacting with others.

Whiteboard or projector, Kindness Compass Slide Deck, Kindness Scenario Cards Activity, My Kindness Pledge Worksheet, Markers or crayons, and Construction paper (optional)

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Kindness Compass Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
    - Print and cut out the Kindness Scenario Cards Activity.
    - Print copies of the My Kindness Pledge Worksheet for each student.
    - Gather markers or crayons and optional construction paper.

Step 1

Introduction: What is Kindness?

10 minutes

  • Display Kindness Compass Slide Deck (Slide 1-3).
    - Begin with a brief discussion: "What does kindness mean to you?" Ask students to share their initial thoughts.
    - Introduce the idea of a 'Kindness Compass' – an inner guide that helps us choose kind actions and words.
    - Read a short story or show a brief video about kindness (if available and age-appropriate).

Step 2

Exploring Kind Actions and Words

15 minutes

  • Display Kindness Compass Slide Deck (Slide 4-6).
    - Lead an interactive discussion on specific examples of kind actions and words.
    - Ask questions like: "What does kindness look like? What does it sound like?"
    - Use the examples on the slide deck to reinforce understanding.
    - Introduce the Kindness Scenario Cards Activity.

Step 3

Kindness Scenario Cards Activity

15 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups.
    - Distribute the Kindness Scenario Cards Activity to each group.
    - Instruct groups to read each scenario and discuss how they would act kindly in that situation.
    - Circulate among groups, providing guidance and facilitating discussion.
    - After a few minutes, bring the class back together to share some of their responses.

Step 4

My Kindness Pledge

10 minutes

  • Display Kindness Compass Slide Deck (Slide 7-8).
    - Distribute the My Kindness Pledge Worksheet to each student.
    - Explain that they will create their own kindness pledge, promising to use their Kindness Compass.
    - Guide students to draw or write about ways they will show kindness at school and at home.
    - Encourage them to decorate their pledges. Optionally, display completed pledges in the classroom.

Step 5

Wrap-up and Reflection

5-10 minutes

  • Display Kindness Compass Slide Deck (Slide 9).
    - Conclude with a brief reflection: "How does it feel when someone is kind to you? How does it feel when you are kind to others?"
    - Reiterate the importance of using their Kindness Compass every day.

Start discussing what kind actions look like. Give examples.

What Does Kindness Sound Like? 👂

Saying "Please" and "Thank you."

Using a gentle voice.

Saying "I'm sorry" when you make a mistake.

Giving words of encouragement, like "You can do it!"

Continue with examples of kind words.

Present a simple scenario for students to think about.

Now it's your turn to promise to be kind!

You will create your very own Kindness Pledge.

Think about how you will show kindness every day.

Introduce the activity: My Kindness Pledge. Explain they will make a promise.

What to Include in Your Pledge 📝

Draw pictures of kind actions.

Write words about being kind.

Make it colorful and special!

Explain what to include in their pledge: drawings or words.

Keep Your Compass Pointing to Kindness! ✨

Remember to use your Kindness Compass every day.

How does it feel when you are kind?

How does it feel when someone is kind to you?

Let's spread kindness everywhere we go!

Conclude the lesson by asking students to reflect on how kindness makes them and others feel. Reinforce the daily use of their Kindness Compass.
